Axeman attacks people on train in southern Germany

Fuck it, until we get more details about the incident in the OP I don't see why we shouldn't discuss this.

Really? I'm not familiar with the stats for this sort of thing but nine murders in an entire year for a population of 300,000 doesn't sound too excessive to me.

I don't want to sound all peace n love but any amount seems too much. In fairness I should admit I've been to jail here. I only did 8 months in Wandsworth but I heard from and about cons that had killed and were doing life. I can get my head around a sentence of 25 months but not 25 years!

And scared people make wonderful tv viewers.

Yep. I am generally cynically optimistic about the human race. We are doing okay. Not to negate any of the horrible shit that is going on. But head in Hans know.

As a general point like. Not talking about the politics of causes and such.

If it bleeds, it leads.

make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blond who
Comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
It's interesting when people die
Give us dirty laundry

The way I see it, humans are an especially clever kind of animal, and thus are neither angels or demons. So even given ideal social and economic conditions I would entirely expect there to be murderous crimes of passion, individual lapses in judgement leading to death and so on and so forth.

I speak as a failed misanthrope.

I've never understood the appeal of misanthropy.

You haven't met me. ;)

You haven't met me. ;)

That's actually kind of my point. Even if I were to meet the most perfectly vile human being in all of existence, I see no valid reason to extend the well-deserved contempt I would feel for that single individual, and apply it to an entire species of sapient beings. It just doesn't make any fucking sense to me.

People - and by that I include any species capable of what we would recognise as sapience, not just humans - are too complex and environmentally contingent categories of entities to summarily write off as worth dealing with.

Entire races of monsters only exist in fiction.

This happens at the Oktoberfest all the time.

If you are partly aiming that at me. With my general hey let's not all go human race is fucked post. That is not where I am coming from at all. Minimising et cetera.

If it helps I think Isis should be burned to dust. :)

Let's play outrage beengo again.

Of course. But it is complicated. Rationality is not the master of the human mind.

Often I think it should be. There's a lot of misrepresentation of what it means to be rational in popular culture, but I genuinely believe the world would be a better place if it was easier for people to examine things in a dispassionate manner.

Apparently it was 17 year old Afghan refugee which will give the anti-immigration lobby more ammunition. And while "axeman" sounds gruesome in a headline grabbing way, at least in Germany nobody can get their hands on a gun that easily and casualties no doubt would have been much higher if that was that the case.

"In Germany nobody can get their hands on a gun that easily"
Doubt if that's true, but I'm prepared to be proved wrong?

Why do you doubt that ? It's just as difficult as anywhere else in Europe it's strictly regulated. It's not like in the fucking States where any idiot can buy a gun, where the constitution protects that right and where they report a gun massacre every other week.

Thank you for quoting the relatively sensible bit of my post. I try to edit on my phone unsuccessfully and posted all that crap

Unfortunately we are not purely rational beings. That is to the good often. But it creates problems when problem solving on a social level comes into play.

Okay I am pissed and just spouting platitudes now. I have the kernal of a post here.

You can get a gun here in the UK without much bother, but usually they are reactivated weapons or activated replicas, but according to some reports, accessibility to weapons, and weapons of military grade, are much easier in the the continental EU because of the availability of them in Eastern European countries, countries who are now part of the EU.

And that of course is why we constantly hear about gun massacres from Europe !

Of course if you are a criminal or a terrorist and you are connected and put your mind to it, you can get anything anywhere. But most gun crimes are not well planned. That's why massacres in countries where you can't just buy a gun over the counter on a spur are carried out with knives, axes etc and therefore casualties are far lower. Is the whole argument around easy access of guns in the US new to you ?

In short sod off and take your holier than thou argument with you, yes their are more gun related killings in The USA, but the USA has a much bigger population with many more guns per head of population,
"look at the death toll in Europe"
Aye, look at the "the death toll in Europe" have you missed what's happened in France recently?
Not a member of the NRA, are you?

Don't be a twat. It is more difficult to get a gun in Europe and than the USA. don't give me bloke down the pub can sell me a fucking whatever bullshit. Geographically mainland Europe makes it easier to smuggle weapons.

Piss off, harder, granted, but not difficult.
