Breaking news on BBC just now so little information.

Man with axe has attacked and injured at least 20 on a train in Germany.

I feel incredibly saddened and confused by the world at the moment. There are so many tragedies happened.

Fuck's sake.
More than 20 people in Germany have been injured after a man with an axe went on the rampage on a train, German media report.

A police operation including a helicopter is under way in Heidingsfeld, a part of the city of Wurzburg in southern Germany.

Local media (in German) wrote that 21 people had been injured and a suspect appeared to have been shot.

The train line between Wurzburg-Heidingsfeld and Ochsenfurt is closed.

The German news agency DPA reported that the police said some of the victims' injuries were life-threatening.

Depends what crime you're talking about and which part of the States, not that I think it's got much to do with this terrible incident.

Homicides, violent crimes spike in U.S. cities as police grasp for answers

I'm sure it does. Here's the last figures I saw, which were from 2013. It's possible that its spiked since then.

Today, the national crime rate is about half of what it was at its height in 1991. Violent crime has fallen by 51 percent since 1991, and property crime by 43 percent. In 2013 the violent crime rate was the lowest since 1970. And this holds true for unreported crimes as well. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, since 1993 the rate of violent crime has declined from 79.8 to 23.2 victimizations per 1,000 people.

(And, yes, it has nothing to do with the thread. Just trying to reassure folks that the world isn't ending.).

German sites translations i've seen have it as 5 injured - the 20 was the number of passengers on train. Oh yeah, attacker shot dead.

That's from Nov 2015. Things have heated up a fair bit in the US since then, but I think this is something for another thread.

I have noticed a spike in murders where I live. Previously we'd go years without one. This year we've had nine so far. That's still not out of line for a city of 300K

9 murders in a city of 300000 isn't out of line ? Fuck me that's depressing

A topic for another thread. :)

Fuck it, until we get more details about the incident in the OP I don't see why we shouldn't discuss this.

Really? I'm not familiar with the stats for this sort of thing but nine murders in an entire year for a population of 300,000 doesn't sound too excessive to me.

In the UK the average would be three (1.0 per 100k)

In America it would be about 12, apparently.

Depends where you are though as to whether you expect to experience the average.

Ok. These are old stats, but as you can see there's places with higher murder rates. Most run more than that:

Stats of the States - Homicide Mortality

As the editor pointed out, the rates vary a lot by state. They also vary a lot by neighborhood. One tiny neighborhood in Omaha runs about 34 per 100K while the state itself runs <4 per 100K.

My theory for the outsize murder rate this year is that the cops broke up the gang population who are at high risk to either commit murder or be a murder victim (there's some overlap) and they moved to other parts of the state. That's making the murder rate more disperse than usual. That's just a theory. I could well be wrong.

Even so, we're still well below 12 per 100K

It's worth remembering most murders don't make the national, never mind international press. But news agenda loves a pattern. And murderous nutcases love something to pin it on. Some external rationale for just being on hinged and blood thirsty.
