Army Of The Dead

Finished.

It was an mega turd.

Not sure what the yay sayers were on about but we obviously like/appreciate very different things.
There was only one bit that I thought was cool, and that was ruined by the set up (to try and make it a shocker) and the underwhelming reaction post incident.
Ultimately it’s all down to personal preference and that’s all fine of course. But whereas I would perfectly understand someone who might consider anything less good than the classics of the genre, such as the Romero films, Shaun of the Dead, or Walking Dead etc as rubbish, I would really struggle to understand someone who enjoys mindless rubbish such as Cockneys vs Zombies, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and countless others of the genre to think this was bad.

This was a very badly put together film riddled with flaws in script, pacing, emotion, logic, music etc. It also clearly thinks it's far more intelligent than cockneys Vs zombies and pride and prejudice and zombies, which are obviously (by title alone) starting from a fun throwaway comedy perspective.

Dawn of the dead and Shaun of the dead are good because they are nicely put together well constructed films.

That's Snyder's problem in a nutshell. He is not anywhere near as smart or talented as he thinks he is so his films end up crap because he got pull off what he wants.

The bit where the zombie spun that girls head around. Bit shit because she only mentioned one minute before that she liked the bloke. He was angry for another minute then everybody forgot. Basically his flipping daughter got pretty much everyone (including him) killed
I didn't really think about this one, you're right though. In general there were too many characters and with no meaningful development.

I thought there was loads of work to set up perils that didn't go anywhere like

the booby traps outside the vault, the helicopter not working, and to a fair extent the reappearance of the cop type guy

Yes. It was a cool body shock horror moment with a comically tacked on emotional investment moment.
Daughter beef with Dad was ridiculously poor (and sorted with one 30 second conversation).

And you are absolutely right about the booby traps, helicopter and cop. As eye rollingly predictable as they might have been, if you are not going to do them in any way other that 'here is a thing, now there isn't' without any plot adjustment/integration, just don't do them. Annoyingly, a lot of what is wrong with this film is wrong on a very very basic level. The likes of me should not be completely bemused as to how so much easily solvable shite slipped through the net on such a big budget production.
I can see how snyders Watchmen failed, but I can equally see how they thought it would work, but Army of the dead is shit off the bat. I assume someone read the script before they started filming.

Agreed. His films all look like he has a really decent crew and huge budget to make hack amateur 'asylum films' flick.

I managed half an hour of it. Any more would have been cruel and unusual punishment.

ah it has a bit of nostalgia because the the dead series of movie

i even watch Romero lost footage 2000's movies

saying that Snyders first movie at least started with a johnny cash song ffs

They weren’t very clear about what happened to Geeta and her mate, the people that Kate got nearly everyone killed for

maybe he was high and had just watched the suicide squad

let just hope the sequel is not as bad

has anyone watched his Justice League? Not sure if I cba.
Have only liked two of his films and one I feel guilty about

Which ones? The best I can think of about any of his films is 'It's OK, but with some obvious flaws'.
Watchmen looks like it could actually have mostly been fixed in editing, but it's probably only all there essentially because he pretty much followed the comic book shot for shot. His first big mistake. His second was the squid removal. It's long and boring with shit music.

The Half in the Bag review

Some interesting points. Mike generally nails it for the flat-lining lack of tension. Jays idea of copying Aliens does appear to be true in part, but it didn't really apply well to the zombie situation and certainly wasn't executed as well.

I think Mikes point about all the flaws really sticking out because the film was essentially pretty unengaging, and your mind wanders into areas of production etc. This definitely happened when I watched it, and it's really not something I normally do, even when watching a trashy or just plain crap film.

I enjoyed Dawn of The Dead and feel bad about enjoying 300

Dawn of the Dead was I think passable from what I remember. I had my expectations set really really low when I watched it though. I notice that it was actually written by James Gunn, which might have helped. (Just seen in the half in the bag review above).
300 was again not Snyders story and was co directed. I wasn't mad keen on it overall, but it was entertaining enough for sure.
