I really don't get this perception that you still have to do loads of stuff in the terminal in Linux - I barely ever open the terminal.

I bought a monitor on Saturday. It worked immediately out of the box in Ubuntu but took loads of frustrating messing around to get it to be detected by Windows, bizarrely.

I think it depends on the distro.

If you go for arch you definitely need to spend some terminal time; at least until you've got the window manager you want etc. installed and configured
