Anti- Forced Marriages Law

If marraiges were not recognised by law then there would be no forced marraiges. Stands to reason innit.
No it doesn't.

There would still be people forced into religious marriages and into oppressive households. I don't think the issue is people being forced into marriage for legal reasons (as in for next of kin status) but are being forced into abusive relationships. Whether you call it marriage or not makes no difference.

so, will this law also apply to the british royal family then? ;)

(agreed that the whole idea of marriage as a legal/financial status (as opposed to a purely religious/community thing) is complete bullshit (and hence that the gay campaigners for legal gay marriage are grabbing the wrong end of the stick, imo), but also agreed that that wouldn't stop religions/patriarchal family cultures being fucked up in the first place...)

Will the left display it's most fuckwitted side and launch protests against this law - with placards reading:
"DEFEND FORCED MARRIAGES!
STOP THIS RACIST LAW!"?

It won't be the Left per se doing this but I can imagine something very similar being promulgated by the Swappies :(

Same as the conflict between the old and the new testaments in the Bible.
There is stuff in the old that contradicts the new and vice versa.

Yeah, the NT and OT are even more ludicrous in their contradictions...

But in fairness it's generally accepted that NT takes precedence. Except by the fundies who like the old-skool fire and brimstone stuff.

I hate to say it, but perhaps this is one area where all that 'citizenship' guff might actually be quite useful? Educating immigrants that forced marriages are utterly unacceptable in British culture might be a positive step (though I know it won't help a lot of people).

Well, when I started this thread I rather hoped to smoke out a few comments from SWP/Respect posters.

They seem to be a bit scare.

Any indication as to which way Gorgeous George will vote in the house on this one, should he, by some miracle be there at the time.....
