Americans on TV drinking coffee

Why do Americans on TV seem to get a speed / coke type high if they drink more than two cups of coffee? I have had coffee in the US and it's no different to here.
Culturally it seems to be everywhere from Garfield to Friends.

A coffee in the morning gives you that get up and go buzz, can't talk to anyone until I have had one.
Drink a couple of espressos and I can get just about anything done, but get really angry late afternoon.

I drink many cups of coffee a day but have never experienced anything of the sort.

What's all that about then?

I can only handle one brew a day made with 15g of beans and only at home.
I got over-caffeinated quite a lot until I started getting a bit more precise in my making of it.

i went to a thing once when i was doing photography and i hammered the free coffee and chocolate eclairs. after that i was a total bellend, showing off and eventually got more and more offensive til i got sick of myself and went home.
Humm, I did once see a guy at college who went a bit bananas after a coffee. Like a drunkard. That's it though.

Coffee has virtually no effect on me. I don't think I've ever experienced this 'caffeine buzz' people bang on about.

I mean I know I'm a heathen who drinks instant and all, but whatever it is that people are getting off on, I'm not feeling it.

While I wouldn't completely agree with:

I'm definitely much better/more tolerant in the morning once I've got some coffee down me so 🤷‍♀️.

I am like death in the morning till I've had a coffee. But I wouldn't say I feel much of a kick from them really. But then if I drink any coffee after noon (or eat strong dark chocolate) I will be unable to sleep at all till about 4 in the morning.

at work in croydon i would get massively stoned in my smoke filled little fiat during dinnertime, then neck a can of cheap generic energy drink in one and go back to work, where i would sing very loudly and bang metal along with the radio and shout a lot.
this was a great way to get through another afternoon but could lead to negative results like broken ribs and stuff when i got punched.

I'm fine when I'm home, but whenever I drank some of the shitty filter coffee in a vain attempt to stay awake in morning work meetings, I would be wired all day ...

Self-reinforcing cultural expectations.

Same way you can get people to act drunk if you give them fake alcoholic drinks.

They expect to act/react in a certain way so they do. This then reinforces the expectation in both themselves and others that view it.

My morning coffee just takes the edge off (or puts it on more accurately), but if I have a couple of espressos within an hour of each other during the day I will be wired to fuck.

One of the reasons I don’t drink coffee every day is so that I can get the buzz when I do drink it.

I went to interview Senseless Things at their record label office in Soho Square and they all turned up really late (except for Ben: everyone else was shoplifting in the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street). So I had at least three cups of record label strength coffee before the interview, and then I was a total idiot during the interview, couldn’t organise my thoughts at all and made a proper hash job of it. Had to cobble the piece together in the end. Taught me a lesson though. I never did interviews buzzed or high after that.
