Akira - live action re-make

I think it's time for the united nations to step in and draw up a list of films for which attempting a remake is punishable by public execution. Naturally the new rules would have to be backdated to encompass those responsible for casting Nicholas Cage in the wicker man.

Ooh, I know let's do a remake of the godfather but with the cast of the sopranos

That is fucking hilarious :D Did he just beat the shit out of Kathleen Turner?

Anyway - Akira. How the crap are they going to do the closing scenes? Also, the script is awful - it's anime, so the script is always awful - but what are they going to do with it?

What, like all the stuff that happens after Akira wreck Neo-Tokyo? :D Like, most of the story?

You're going to take it out and put it out its misery aren't you Shippy?

actully i'm a bit in too minds about it

i mean it's not like i even think akira is that good.... i dislike the charactor design and the plot has been cut to shit because they are trying to condense a 10 volume manga into one film...

however even though i don't love it it does have some good animation techniques... and the soundtrack is fantastic by itself

and i just hate pointless hollywood remakes.... what next? japanese live action stuff is bad enough let alone americanisation... dubbig is bad enough

the movie is practically a totally different story... it leaves out all of the stuff about the different fractions.... the religious movement becomes a quick comedy character in background shots... also akira is practically a mcguffin ....

Maybe that is why I have never, ever understood Akira....

don't try to understand the movie too much... a lot of the stuff about power and nature is rather like the science stuff in star trek... sounds big but is pretty much meaningless (well some meaning and plenty of ambiguity)

the only real thing to understand is that some people have some kind of power... the government/military/big corporations tried to boost that power by giving subjects shit loads of drugs... in some that help boost their powers but in the case of akira and later tetsuo it caused a chain reaction of sorts leaving them unable to control their powers properly. in akiras case he can redifine space around him... and in the original incident he took himself and a large chunk of tokyo over to the universe next door.... he then later does something simular to contain tetsuos reaction... this is why you see bits of old tokyo mixed with new tokyo towards the end... there is also some indication that now freed from physical restraints tetsuo can come to terms with his powers (the ending bit)

Right. So the pink, swelling octopus thing was Tetsuo having a bad reaction? If, as you say, it's been edited badly then maybe that's why it was a bit confusing for me. I watched it twice and was entertained but a bit mystified.

he has natural powers but his forced awakening by his run in with the kid and later testing caused him to overload

the manga more focused on his desire for power

It does explain Tetsuo loosign control of his power on several occassions tho - first off when he escapes from the govt labs, when he's fighting the other kids and finally when he goes all pink and gooey...

I always thought that Akira contains Tetsuo in that teeny tiny universe that floats into Kaneda's hand...
