Ahmad Jamal ‎– Portfolio Of Ahmad Jamal

1960 - i cant find my 1960 list but
1961 - back to #1 with this

That era was a high point but he carried on strong on and on - this is brilliant from 71

anyhow really recommend exploring his music, he's massively underrated and a undeniable master at the same time

Not many jazz musicians born before 1943 are still alive. So that's most of the second wave hard boppers and the early modal and free jazz generation gone. Obviously not a lot of musicians are still active into their eighties anyway, but for many there were also the consequences of "the jazz life". The pandemic will also have curtailed touring for this generation.

Richard Davis, born 1930 like Sonny Rollins, is alive but I'm not sure he's still playing. Sonny isn't of course. Same with Benny Golson, Lou Donaldson, Terry Gibbs, Bill Holman and Martial Solal, all born in the 1920s.

Born before 1943 still alive and active, at least until recently : Roscoe Mitchell, Julian Priester, Ron Carter, Archie Shepp, Charles Lloyd, Steve Kuhn, Charles Gayle, Andrew Cyrille, Kirk Lightsey, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Jack DeJohnette, Wadada Leo Smith. Reggie Workman?
Abdullah Ibrahim, Louis Moholo.
Mike and Kate Westbrook, Tony Oxley, Norma Winstone, John McLaughlin, Eddie Prevost, Keith Rowe, Brian Auger. Trevor Watts?
Peter Brötzmann, Enrico Rava, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Irene Schweizer. Gunter Hampel?

Doubtless more. But not many.
