A4 bags

Going to a gig at an O2 venue at the weekend, travelling a bit for it and also doing stuff in the day beforehand so I want to have a bag with me for a few basics like phone charger, book for the journey etc, but they have a "no bags larger than A4" policy. Does anyone know how strict they are about this? Will a cloth tote bag that doesn't actually take up any space be prohibited for being taller than an A4 piece of paper? Suppose I do have a sort of satchel/messenger bag that's probably closer to A4 size, but then I'm not used to measuring bags in paper sizes.

eta: probably worth adding that it is the Liverpool one I'm planning on going to, not sure if that changes anything but I like to believe scouse venue staff must be inherently sounder than ones in London or wherever.

Printworks used to say that. I took cloth tote bags on several occasions and never had any trouble. Dunno.

Some places are veery strict, others not so. Gig in Finsbury Park made us go and buy a smaller bag to squish our bigger bag in to, ffs.
