a thread of ole skool proper footballers

Graham French: Luton Town 1965-1973, legendary drinker and user of the pubs around Luton. Often played clearly hungover. In 1970 someone pissed him off so he went down to this guy's local pub and shot him. He spent three years inside!

C'est la vie.

At least he had a tale he could tell the grandchildren. Or even random Gasheads standing around outside the away turnstiles at Kenilworth Road

Think that was in 1996ish. Same night I spent ages talking to a Luton steward slagging off our new home kit (Tesco carrier bag) and Luton's away kit (Watford-a-like yellow).

Christ my memory dredges up some useless shite at times
oh god, don't remind me - some of the 90s kits were awful. I actually have this one:

At the time I thought it was appropriate that Luton were sponsored by a scrap company. Given what's happened to them since that deal ended, I'd now contend some bizarre form of karma has been at play

Retired and now training to be a taxi driver. Living the dream.

... and apparently creating nightmares for others:

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the mother said: 'Some people say they may see flashers as pests or nuisances, but
my idea of Neil Shipperley is a predator.

'His aim was to intimidate us isolate us and shock us he succeeded were were shaken disgusted and appalled by his actions. I felt anger towards him and his filthy thrill.'

Her teenage daughter said: 'After the incident I felt as though I was a victim. I was scared, anxious and felt vulnerable.

I worry now what would have happened if my mum wasn't there.'

derek hales.jpg Derek Hales and Mike Flanagan, still mates before their infamous fist fight with each other in the centre circle at the Valley during an FA Cup replay against Maidstone. It turned out that one of the other Charlton players had told Flanagan that Hales was, erm, 'in a rather friendly relationship' with his wife as the teams were about to go out for the second half. Something happened during a break in play that made the red mist come down for Flanagan and the next thing you know, fists were flying. Both players were sent off. Now, now, children.... play nicely.

Someone from work sent a message on whattsapp to say martin peters would be worth 250 million at today prices.
Was listening to a podcast about this. Comparing old legends to current players. With the changes to pitch, balls, training sports science players like Best, Pele, Greaves, Peters could not come close to high level professional football. Even Lineker said on the podcast he would not make the Premier League.

Of course if players like Peters grew up in the modern era maybe they would get the same improvements in fitness and skill. Alongside their natural talent maybe they would still be worldy players.

Different game
