A clever history of the Royal Family

hiraethified
Bloody hell, it's a complicated story but this video does a good job of explaining the history:

(*yes Royals, scroungers, parasites etc)

starting with the Norman line? What about Alfred the Great!? Or his son Edward the Elder who clawed much of this region out of the clutches of the danes and freed us from the danelaw? what about the heptarchy ffs! What about aethelred the Unready :(

Aethlred the Unready gets a bad rap in my opinion.

Although I am a big fan of Cnut.

(Can't see the vid at work owing to IT policy so not sure how many mentions of him are in it btw...)

I knew this was going to be CPGrey before I opened the thread!

Loads of his/their videos are worth a watch. I liked the bizarre borders ones. :)

Aren't the links back that far pretty tenuous and only ret-conned in at a later date?

He also said the life of man was like the swift flight of a sparrow across a hall, which was alluded to in the book I'm reading.
still being quoted after what? 8?9? hundred odd years must win some points for him

I did try and read his History of the English Church and People once that I found in a second hand shop but must admit gave up. Being one of the few writers of your time probably helps your relevance but suppose there's a few even more lost in the mists of time, even Gildas probably not as well known.

it doesn't stop egregious bullshitting. Take Pliny the Elder who talked absolute bollocks all his life and yet is still remembered. He was of a fairly literate society

It took me a while as a young 'un to realise that just because someone was a genuine classic it didn't stop them being wrong, a twat etc, and you had to read them a bit more critically.
