US disregards diplomatic protocol, humiliates India's deputy consul general

Wouldn't you know? It has happened before - once in India. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/bangalore/french-diplomat-held-on-charge-of-raping-his-child/article3531968.ece

    SWP expulsions and squabbles

Let's not exaggerate. I don't think the SWP have a casual attitude to gang rape, do they?

US disregards diplomatic protocol, humiliates India's deputy consul general

And you're supporting the breaking of humanitarian law in allowing diplomats to import workers at slave wages and get away with it because of their alleged immunity. Sounds like tit for tat. :D

Just found out a guy who works for me is being a git

Don't quite understand why you are getting so worked up ymu. After the appalling rape there was a widescale protest not just about the rape but also about womens rights in India. It raised the issue that India has a bad record on womens rights much higher in the minds of the world, including...

Japanese mayor says that WWII 'comfort women' were necessary

No. They pretty much took their lead from (IIRC) their experience in the revolutionary war in the States, and encouraged soldiers and sailors to use local brothels, where available, which had the "bonus" of somewhat bringing the locals on-side due to the economic growth it caused. I think Hugh...

    rape in the developing world

the protests against the 2012 delhi bus rape was more a case of people saying down with this sort of thing, that has gone unreported and unpunished for so long even then that didn't stop Guru Bapu from indulging in a bit of slut shaming from wiki

    SWP expulsions and squabbles

Certain kinds of rape are worse than others and funnily enough are recognised as such by the bourgeois legal system that we have.

    SWP expulsions and squabbles

Well, the issue isn't just about gang rape in India, it's about casual attitudes. Then again, I'm not entirely convinced that, given what we know about Martin Smith and the full-timer in Sheffield, that the CC is above covering up a gang rape or bullying the victim of a gang rape into shutting...

Hundreds of women assaulted in German NYE celebrations

What I was up to there was looking at the resemblance between many of the accounts of NYE and the stuff which it keeps getting compared to, asking 'if the resemblance is more than coincidence, what's the patterning mechanism?' Or something like that. So from that point of view there's a...

Just found out a guy who works for me is being a git

And you thought that the fact that a rape happened there recently was good enough evidence to back up your assertion with? Because rape is definitely not a problem in Europe? Doesn't happen. Not 'real' rape anyway. There's a recent UN report you could quote on why it's the worst place in the...

    Sexual street harassment in Brixton

"externalisation of behaviours normally hidden" And what would these behaviours be? There is a world of difference between chatting up a woman in the street and sexist abuse. It is an issue in other countries. Such as India. Which have a street culture.

Just found out a guy who works for me is being a git

Look at what you posted and the context you posted it in. It couldn't be much more insulting to women and Indian people if you tried. I know you're a complete sweetheart and you weren't trying to offend anyone, but perhaps try a bit harder not to? This article explains it quite well.

    SWP expulsions and squabbles

Given the recent issues on rape that have been highlighted in India of late, I wonder what 'cultural' affinity they could be referring to?

Just found out a guy who works for me is being a git

And yet, India has been in the news recently after a vicious rape and the resulting protests. Just saying.

Just found out a guy who works for me is being a git

I think you are being over prickely ymu, I did not suggest rape does not happen in the UK or USA for that matter - perhaps if I had emphasised the indian reaction to the rape rather than the rape itself you might have been less offended. But for me, it was the reaction to the rape that made me...

why the bbc is going down the pan

Excellent piece from the Beeb's man in Delhi on the horrific Delhi gang-rape, which sadly now also encompasses murder: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-20765364 I have just returned from Mumbai following a short trip for a friend's wedding. This story was the only topic in town...

    International Women's Day

Make It Happen. Does that mean I'm not allowed to watch India's Daughter? Because it doesn't fit with the theme? My sister is a single mum. Many of my friends are single mums or have been single mums, so I'm well aware of the issues they face. Maybe because International Men's Day barely...

    SWP expulsions and squabbles

Given on-going events in India you can see why they'd be hyper sensitive about it, since they are trying so hard to battle against very casual attitudes towards rape there you can see why they wouldn't want to import foreigners with those views too.

    Idle No More

Yep, This is what is going on in the colonies. when a women is assaulted like that in India there's shock from the canadian public. When an epidemic of rape and murder is inflicted on native women here it's met with silence. There's a fucking long fight ahead.

Where did the idea that India is a spiritual country come from?

I think the route of my irritation with the word "spiritual" as a descriptor for an individual or groups of people comes from self-styled hippie travellers I've encountered all over India. "Yah, I'm not religious but I am a spiritual person" "The ghats at sunset...so spiritual"... etc...
