Why does Dalston Kingsland stink?

And not meaning "rubbish", but that it actually stinks.

Why? What is it? Every day without fail the silverlink goes through there, gets to Dalston, then uuurgh it smells like a sewer.

Is it the smelliest place in London? Or are any other places comparable?

I had to get the train from dalston kingsland every day for 2years whilst going to college (just finished). It is the worst smell ever!

The only place that smelt when i lived there was around Ridley Road market where the meat stalls were when the street had been washed down and it had been a hot night.
Otherwise no problems at all.

the station has had a sewer problem for a while i think, last summer was particularly bad

I noticed this recently. On the outgoing journey I thought it was the chap that sat next to me.

Not been to the station but there is a stench on the train itself.

there are lots and lots of rats running around on the embankments behind the platforms at DK. I wonder if that's anything to do with the sewer problem.

i was on the train from highbury and islington to dalston, last summer, someone puked up on the floor of the carriage - that was an incredibly long 2 minute journey

yuk!!!

That reminds me...Jan saw some rats SHAGGING by the embankment recently.... ...they were squealing and everything!

(ex North London lines operations manager)

There are some big north / south sewers crossing under the tracks which are over a 100 years old and a permenant source of trouble - in my days back in the 90s they leaked badly - into the track ballast givng an appalling stench and the worst job ever for some unfortunate engineers who had to shovel the undescribable filth out overnight. It also caused the signals to play up so (to add to the discomfort) triains had to be flagged past at slow speed ! I guess the problem has arisen again.

Similar brick sewar collapse at Kilburn High Rd showed that the brick arch was full of solidified grease (fast food muck I guess) - which led to about 12 inches of free flow space for sewage and water - again - the worst bloody job in the world for the team that had to water jett it out !

Gives a whole new dimension to "creaking infrastructure" - not railway please note....

Must be just on the train because the place does not smell

are you having a laugh?! it stinks big time! i put it down to the market and the fish shops. and further to the stench, its hecticness is comparable only to brixton. saturdays are the worst. last time i went down there on a saturday i required a course of tranquilisers afterwards. give me church street any day of the week - much better class of person ;)

yes, the rats down church street only read the guardian. and they're all white. and their kids are called isobelle and harry. and they only eat organic waste.

And fair trade, natch

davesgcr thanks very much! I think I would even be grateful for finding out at last. If you weren't the North London lines operations manager. You bastard!!!!

When I lived in Dalston I put it down to the stinky market, so it's interesting to hear about the sewers from davesgcr.

I have a fathers name on my birth certificate and I stopped being Ops Manager on the North London line in 1999 (April 10th actually)

davesgcr - whilst you're here - why does Waterloo's Bakerloo platforms always smell of parmesan cheese/vomit?

Well I guess that explains it. I catch the silverlink everyday via DK & it's been quite bad over the last few days... yesterday was particularly rank!

I came out of the back entrance of the Kingsland Shopping centre the other day - next to the railway tracks - and the stench was disgusting. Def not the market.

Fucking pisses me off actually. They've just decided to knock down the old Four Aces/Labyrinth/Dalston Theatre building & replace it with an 18 story block yet they can't fix the fucking sewers.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they blamed the market for the smell & got it shut down cos it's not in keeping with their view of the Dalston of the future.

Cunts.

Very true :(

Not forgetting the wilful destruction and selling off of Dalston Lane.

Not at work.

I used to live round there & emailed (this is me trying to remember off the top of my head) info@opendalston.org & they were campaigning against it.

The case was heard only the other day & it's all being knocked down.

I'll try to remember to check my other email address when I get home & post again.

an 18 storey block is not really in keeping with the area. Considering Hackney spent about 80 million quid to demolish their high rise housing, I don't see how they can justify putting a monstrosity up.

Isn't the old theatre and Dalston Lane a conservation area? Supposedly Dalston theatre use to be as grand as Hackney Empire but with no proper roof, I've read that alot of the interior has fallen in.

Too late, it's all been approved.
