Why are Taiwan recognised in the Beijing olympics?

China host the games, they don't run them as such.

Ahh just seem Chinese Taipei is the official name but here in Korea the commentators keep saying Taiwan.....

They call it 'Chinese Taipei' as a compromise - with the 'Chinese' taken by Beijing to mean 'part of China.'

Wasn't Taiwan recognised as 'official' China by the UN/something like that for quite a long time? Seem to remember a bizarre situation whereby someone threatened sanctions/invasion against the Peoples Republic, and you had the 'Chinese' delegate saying 'Oh yes, please do' etc.
