Which AppleTV generation?

MrCurry

right after this urgent rest
We currently have a gen2 appleTV, which has worked well for the 6 years we‘ve had it, but now it’s getting a bit long in the tooth. There‘s one particular catch up TV service which will no longer be available on anything less than a gen 4 Apple TV, so we need to upgrade.

From what I can see… appletv gen 4 is HD (1080p) and came out in 2015 and is still remarkably expensive at around €160
Apple TV gen 5 came out in 2019, is 4K but has been replaced with gen 6 and may not be for sale any more
apple TV gen 6 is 4k and came out this year and costs €199 for 32GB or 20 euros more for a 64GB one.

So it seems like it’s a gen 4 or gen 6 and there’s 40 euros price difference. My Netflix subscription is only Hd and I don’t know if I want to pay an extra £3 a month to get 4K, so I suppose the gen 4 is the one, but it grates spending so much on hardware which is 6 years old already. Surely next year Apple are going to launch a replacement model and I’ll be crying into my cornflakes?

ps. I want to be able to get Disney+ too, which the current gen2 box won’t do.

I have a Gen 3. The only thing it’s good for is airplay these days. Even Apple TV+ is available across other devices including Android which would’ve been the only other reason to have stuck with them.

I just don’t think any Apple TV device really justifies the price anymore. A 4K Fire stick or Roku will do the job for a fraction of the cost.

I’ve no idea what gen I have. Purchased in jan 2019. It’s a 4K with the not new 2021 remote.

Because I have a NAS and download a lot of 4K content to plex at the time it was the best value product for price with plenty of grunt to handle x265 files. I don’t really use it for much else. Just Amazon prime. The only other good thing is it does sound to my HomePod (now discontinued) and I will say it does an awesome job of that. Especially for films.

I also have an Amazon 4K fire stick which is side loaded with my dodgy IPTV sub. It also plays the plex 4K stuff fine (must have not been available in 2019 or my research was crap)

I’ll be honest I prefer the interface of the Apple TV and the apps seem slicker. Don’t know if they are worth £100+ tag though just for that if I had to make the same decision today.

Thanks guys. I don’t even need appletv+, just the catchup tv services from the domestic providers over here (SVTplay & TV4 play). Plus disney+ and Netflix. I see they are making games available on Apple TV now - zero interest in that.

Firetv stick would probably be a good option if it were supported by Amazon for Sweden, but even on Amazon.se they don’t sell it and the one I bought from U.K. Amazon won’t get the Swedish catchup services. I use it with a smart DNS service to pickup U.K. catchup TV.

I suppose there probably is another option which will be better value than an appletv, it’s just we’ve always used it and like the interface.
