Where to stay just outside London? June 24

We have two gigs in London with a spare night in between and it feels pointless coming home and going back the next day.

We’re staying near Wembley on the Friday night then on Sunday in Canning Town for a gig at the O2. Can’t stay at either for another night.

There’s a lot going on in London that weekend so we haven’t found a reasonably priced hotel with parking that isn’t a rat hole.

We’re driving because there’s 5 of us for part of the weekend so much cheaper for everyone. That’s set and not changing.

Now we’re thinking let’s get slightly out of London on the Saturday to save some cash and just chill but where?
I guess it would make sense for it to be somewhere East for easy access to our airbnb on the Sunday.

The spare night is 22/06. We could go to Brighton and stay with mates but actually fancy going somewhere different but I don’t have any idea where.

I did think about finding a spa on Groupon but got the fear. 😄

Try a Premier Inn in a commuter town? They may be cheaper at the weekend? Welwyn Garden City is ok for restaurants and cafes, the Premier Inn is shit though.

Yeah, somewhere you don’t mind spending part of the day. Maybe one with a cinema / nice restaurants if you want a break from gigs.

Probably inland as coastal probably costs double on a summer Saturday.

How about Rochester or Gravesend. Easy access to London on the A2, both interesting places with history. I haven't checked accommodation, but I expect it would be reasonable.

Thanks I’ll have a look at Hertfordshire and Kent. I’ve been to Rochester years ago as my family are from that area but don’t remember it.

General areas are good then I can have a look at hotels. There are a few reasonably priced ones around Canary Wharf but if we could get nicer further out I’m happy to do that. Just thought to check Blue Light offers too.

Looby I don’t know if they accept tents or if it’s only for caravans/ autocaravans, but if camping is an option for you, there’s a camping site in Crystal Palace, which surely must be a lot cheaper than even the shittiest hotel within the Greater London area. And whereas it might be the wrong side of town, it is served by both National Rail and the Overground.

I can't offer any advice about places to stay, but I will say if you are going to be in Canning Town for a night it might look like a shithole, but we have a couple of unexpectedly good Turkish restaurants/takeaways - Efes and Meydan

Usually I’m good with camping but not the others! 😄
Plus the car will be full already. Thanks though.

Thanks. Looking at the map we’re down by the river but need to walk into Canning Town to get the tube to the O2. I’ll be suggesting a cab! 😄

This is a tricky question. SE England has alot going on. Depends on what you like doing and what you're looking for.

What about Maidstone ? Then within easy driving reach you have in no particular order:
Whitstable (seaside oysters and walks)
Faversham (olde Dickensian)
Leeds Castle (top pick)
Bodiam Castle
Idyllic pubs in the N.Kents downs e.g. Ringlestone
Vineyards in the Weald e.g.Chapel Down nr Tenterden

I'd go Tunbridge Wells. Park the car overnight and it's 40 mins from Charing Cross on the train. But then if you were thinking of driving to Brighton you could stay at one of two Travel Lodges Tonbridge has and then it's like 10 miles to Tunbridge Wells and you can explore the Pantiles. Or obvs a hotel in Tunbridge Wells. There's also the Annual Soapbox cart racing competition on the 22nd in Dunorlan Park, wine tasting via the Spa Valley Railway, the Pantiles food market and loads more that day. Tunbridge Wells also have the once "small venue of the year" winning venue that's having a Back To the 80s night that night.

We ended up staying in London as it was not much cheaper to leave London and definitely less faff. We were at the Radisson Blu near Canary Wharf. Perfect for the O2 and only £180. Considering there were three massive gigs on plus ABBA Voyage that was pretty good.

Loads cheaper than the slightly ratty hotel we stayed at the night before by Wembley.
