Whats the deal with using tap-pay bank cards on oyster readers?

All aboard the 303 bus.
Do you just get charged at normal oyster rates, or do you pay a single ticket fare everywhere you go?

I've had a quick google, but just got confused by it.

It might actually be cheaper than Oyster because weekly caps apply to contactless but not to Oyster, although there was a fuss about this when they were introduced last year maybe they have fixed it now.

I use contactless a lot to get to work when I can't be arsed buying a weekly card on the Oyster, usually charges me £6.40 a day for Zones 1 and 2.

Back in London and am guessing it's just not worth getting an Oyster card any more because of this.

Is there any earthly reason I should get one? Other than the possibility of losing bank cards - I've lost countless Oyster cards on drunken evenings or having them just fall out of pockets cos you need your payment method to be accessible.

No not worth it if you've got a contactless debit card. Only thing is to make sure you use the same card for all journeys during the course of a day so that the cap gets applied. If you use different ones it won't.

Thanks. That's one thing less to worry about :)

One thing I've noticed. Having misplaced my Oyster card the other day, is that bank cards are ever so slightly slower at registering on the reader than Oysters. It's not enough to make a one off trip worth worrying about, but several lost quarter-seconds is starting to get on my tits.

I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

One thing that did occur to me....Ive used my bank card on the bus but didn't get a ticket. Should I have done? And what happens if an inspector gets on?

You don’t get a ticket now. If an inspector gets on they’ll scan your card with a handheld scanner and it’ll show you’ve tapped in.
