vintage radio handbags

wayward bob

i ate all your bees
if you could buy a handbag made out of a good looking vintage radio with the insides stripped out would you? :hmm:

i've no idea, i think the battery is a lot of the weight, but decent old ones would be leather on wood, and yeah, wooden handbags isn't something you see much of...

more to the point i don't see anyone doing it, which kind of suggests there's a reason for that :hmm:

It would be a bit painful to carry I'd have thought, bashing into you. And heavy. And vulnerable to bits falling off. I'd buy other things made out of radios though.

I would if an effective shoulder strap could be incorporated within a cohesive aesthetic. I have short strap handbags, and I pretty much never use them.

i'm making my first foray into home sewing leather some time soon as i have a bag strap to mend. i reckon incorporating a colour matched leather shoulder strap could be easily doable even without sewing, i could use rivets for e.g.

I reckon my SIL would- and loads of her friends. That one you linked to looks fab. Possibly more of an evening/occasion bag than an everyday one?

transistor radios were made to withstand a fair bit of carting about, i'm not sure the bits-falling-off thing is that likely? if you choose your originals with care :hmm:

The vintage leather and wood radios are quite pricey. What do you think your labour and materials costs would be?

looking at spares or repair on ebay they seem to come in around the £20-30 mark including post, less if you're lucky/choose well. if i could find them in a charity shop or car boot prolly less. fittings - pennies. lining would depend on materials used, suede would up it, but £5 tops. labour would be the time to strip them out, line, fit hinges/catches - i dunno, 2-3 hours? add another hour and extra materials cost to fit a shoulder strap.

£75 max including shoulder strap too much?

£75 would be fine as a price point if they're vintage ones I reckon. What do you think about those small transistor radios as across the shoulder mobile phone holders?

i was looking at the small ones for manbags :D tbf it's not as though i have to go into production with this (although i could if the market was out there) just trying to get a vaguely plausible upcycling project together.

it would also leave me with a whole pile of interior doings and whatsits that i can do interesting things with...

Same for me. All my regular bags are cross-body now.

With a long strap and not too heavy I think it would be ace.
