VICE Article: Why We Need to Rid Football of Commercialism, Interview with our very own Joe Kennedy

There's a good number of points there, and a stupid headline.

I have to say - although I had no agency whatsoever anyway - that I'm baffled that what you'd take away from GWF is that argument. There are literally two more instances in the book of me comparing going to football matches to being on acid than there are moments where I say 'football should have no commercial aspect', which is to say there are two of the former and none of the latter.

Joe K - How does reading a football fanzine lead to Kafka?

In as much as reading the (very good, very surreal) Darlo fanzine Mission Impossible when I was a kid - in a period when I was 14 or so and just dicking about at school, really - introduced me to a load of, ahem, alternative culture. Think my first references to The Fall and Jean-Luc Godard were in there as well. I think the point they were always trying to make was that there was a direct correlation between supporting a shit football team and broadly pessimistic art.

You lost me at "In an interview back in 1991, the French philosopher Jacques Derrida..." :)

To be fair, that was the interviewer, not me. I'm not an enormous Jacky D fan - reminds me too much of being a postgrad surrounded by people who seemed viscerally offended by the fact I attended and played football. Don't see many books by those fuckers, to be fair.
