Help USENET / Newsgroups

Looking on the net. It appears this NNTP protocol is not quite dead. So does anyone still use newsgroups? They were vibrant back in the day. In fact it was my first introduction to forum type online debates.

So does anyone still lurk or even post?

I think I'm just disappearing down a nostalgic rabbit hole.

Newsgroups I used to view, uk.local.london, uk.music.rave and how can I forget, alt.drugs.psychedelics.

Oh good times... [emoji4]

Well, you need a good indexer in order to find stuff, as most of it these days is encrypted to make takedowns harder. Then you'll need a good binaries newsreader and usually a paid subscription to a usenet provider (some isps provide free access). The speed of downloads is very fast - my 150mb connection is maxed out.

uk.local.london, uk.music.rave were my two main groups. Loved 'em back in the day. We even had a uk.local.misc (or something similar) meet in the Albert in Brixton once. A predictably strange bunch showed up!

I used to use them a lot, but there's only one I still subscribe to (and occasionally post on) - very much for old-time web designers/developers. And the person who runs the server has said that they'll probably close it sometime next year.

I was educated (the expensive way) in usenet etiquette in uk.rec.motorcycles. It’s probably still going but I doubt it’s the same as back in the day.
