Hi everyone,

Do you, or anyone you know, know the story of the Union Jill flag?
I've seen it in lots of images from protests in the 90's and would love to hear the story about it, meaning of the colours, sightings, anything you can think of!

Thanks a bunch!

I vaguely remember it wound-up all the usual suspects at the time - "an insult to Great Britishness" and all that. Which was probably what it was meant to do? I think it might have been an early stab at a visual statement of equality and diversity?

Yes! I've heard somewhere that the colours represented different elements, though nobody seems to know exactly what. Something along the lines of nature, feminism, protest..

The union Jill came out of the anti Roads protests at Twyford Down and was flown at various occupations of the site. The Union Jill represents a multi stranded, diverse Briain and not the conventional ecosytem destorying system we had and still have, representated by the Union Jack. For more about Twyford Down check Twyford Rising by Helen Benyon.

Quite a neat way of visually representing a colour-blind Britain.

Both similar to, and also very different from:

Yep, I knew a woman in the 90s when I lived in Oxford, called Heather, who had lived on the Newbury occupation who had a Union Jill that she'd made. It ended up being used at Reclaim The Streets etc.

I'm sorry to say my only knowledge of the Union Jill is via the Two Ronnies. In a bafflingly crap series, called The Worm that Turned, Britain suffers under the yoke of cruel and humourless feminists led by, erm, Diana Dors. You can see their version of the Union Jill at around 2:30 in the linked YouTube. sorry in advance
