Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

My van isn't even LEZ compliant. When I bought it in 2014 I had no idea about LEZ and drove to London to see my ma. I immediately got a letter explaining LEZ and saying as I'd just bought the vehicle and probably had no idea that I'd be let off with a warning but I could either convert it or pay £100 per day:eek: and that non compliance was a £250 charge.
I get public transport to London and hire a LEZ compliant van if I'm nipping down over Christmas as I'm usually working and no public transport is available.

from 2021, it is the area within the N / S circular but not the N/S circular itself I think - so you can drive around it without getting charged.

Until then, the present congestion charge zone becomes the first stage ULEZ- this isn't the end of the world if you know your central London, but it does mean that the 4AM short cut through the west end to the M1 will become unfeasible

there will be a lot of relatively cheap shitty derv 4x4s for sale in the next year or two in London I would have thought.

Well, it gives me a time line to move out of London as I'm not selling my old guzzlers just when they might all be running.

Just move outside A205/406 :D

I'm happily living 1/2 mile south of the South Circular with two 30+ yr old vehicles that are LEZ non-compliant.

Only ever cycle or get public trans into town anyway so not a prob for me.

Cheers griff.

I'm already way outside the 205 but you know planning a move is going to take a long time and Kahn will catch up with me...and rightly so.

About 50m north of the congestion charge area here with a ten-year old diesel estate. Never venture into the CC area, even during times it’s not operating.

Moving out of London next week so we’ll be alright until the next city catches up.

What are people's thoughts on the ULEZ emission charges?

I'm impressed with how strong the rule seems to be.
  • £12.50 for the day
  • If you're a minute over midnight you're charged again.
  • Covers a huge part of London. North to south circulars
  • No discounts for residents
  • Runs every day and night of the year
I'm not sure how they can cover and monitor such a large area though. And I don't think taxis are covered, which is shit.

Some old boys on a local forum I post on are going ape shit about it. But I was surprised by how many people on there saw it as a necessary change.

Has anyone got a car that they need to get rid of? Are you livid?
It's a tax and nothing else. Has anyone died in London due to emissions ?

Not a thought for the small business that relies on people driving in to purchase there wears or the self employed builder who cannot afford a almost brand new Van

Khan needs to rethink this one before its to late as in 2021 it will put lots out of work

Just a thought. .. if everyone drove in and paid the charge how the hell does it prevent emissions ?

Nearly ten thousand people a year in London die because of it[/QUOTE

Really and what proof do you have of that. Studies are not always what they are made out to be . Smoking drugs and stabbing are the main cause of deaths in London apart from the usual causes . I would be amazed if there are 10000 death certificates issued in London each year due to vehicle emissions

Ronnyboy nothing we say is going to convince you is it because you want to carry on driving your old motor at no additional cost.
I want to carry on with my small business which involves a 8 year old van and many others are in the same boat and can not afford a new vehicle at around 13k to suit a myth. As I have already said what if everyone pays the charges ..what then?

Khan won't get in again so it may all go like the congestion extension with a new mayor who has half a brain

Put the charges up.

What a silly reply . I expect your one of the many rich Londoners who wouldn't worry about £60 a week going down the drain . Maybe you should look at change.org petition and see some of the comments from some of the 29000 (so far) who are against this tax

Hope none of your family or friends have any breathing based issues :)

I'm one of the many Londoners who, when they clean their windows, find they are coated in black sooty grime from the appalling air quality we have here.

The point of the ULEZ is to improve the air quality. The charge is a deterrent to encourage people to change their vehicles. If everyone just pays it then it's not doing its job, and would need to be raised.

I realise it'll come at a cost to those who need to use vehicles for their day to day business. It'll apply to all your competitors too though. And lots of people walk or cycle as part of what they need to do to carry out their day to day business and earn a living, and currently have to breathe in the pollution from your vehicle.

Ultimately the cost to millions of people's health of not doing anything is more important, in my opinion. I'd like the extended zone to come in yesterday.

Well.let me tell.you a few facts ..firstly, over half the buses in London are diesel and are the biggest polluters going . Secondly I doubt it safe to be cycling around with 20 cartons of goods on a bike even in the lanes that are used for a few hours a day that cost the tax payer millions. I don't disagree with the existing zone becoming the ulez but rhe north and south circulars are pointless. If everyone got out of there cars and vans how do they get to London as the public transport can't cope now

I trust you only use shops services local to you and you don't drive elsewhere polluting the country and stay in London. I certainly hope you don't fly or are you just a "not in my back yard" kind of person

I grew up in London in the 60s so you don't need to give me a lecture about anything. It's strange how people worry about emissions but continue to rake drugs get pissed up and poison themselves with cigarettes.

I think we should tax Londoners who drive past the m25 in the Chelsea tractors and leave all there shit on the beaches when we get a bit of sunshine

Yeah. It is strange. Especially when you note that smoking and drinking have both massively reduced in the last few years. No way of knowing re drugs as people don’t answer honestly given it’s illegal, but anecdotally that's reduced too. Makes you think. Or not in your case cos you seem like a stereotypical angry white van man :)

You really talk shit . You have no proof whatsoever about drinking or smoking and I would say that it's a constant flow as some stop and a new person starts both habits but as the tax and duty keeps the NHS going I expect its ok with you. Maybe we should stop all deliveries to London and you can collect your needs at the docks or outside the m25. That way London will be free of all emissions or maybe bring back the horse and cart which is cheaper than paying out 13k for a euro van

Prove otherwise :)

I supply goods to small shops and they all say cigarette and booze sales are the same as ever . Cigarettes sales may appear down but when you realise that 1 pack in 3 sold are black market then the actual sales are up.

I notice you don't responded to the fact that London gets its supplies from outside and it's all by road so therfore you will also pay more for goods as the cost of transport will rise
