A former Blue Peter presenter was given the job of promoting the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. He said that it was important that school children learned about it, because if Nelson had lost, we would all be speaking Spanish.

TBF it was a French Spanish fleet at Trafalgar…

That battle must have been hell afloat for the crews involved, a lot of whom would have been press-ganged into the Royal Navy [and other navies].
Very loud and very bloody indeed

Yes,
Many many of the people there would have had no choice in it. And the injuries caused in wooden ships getting hit were horrendous. Add that to the medical interventions available and it must have been like hell.

The current set up if you visit Victory is really very well done, take the audio guide and point at the QR codes, when you get down in to the bowels of the ship where they took the injured it's a horrific place to be, you really can get a feel as to how awful it would have been down there, blood sloshing around, limbs in buckets and so on.

Yes, but it would have been France ruling Britain, not Spain.
Actually, I don't think that French rule would have lasted long, and furthermore, I don't think Napoleon wanted all the people conquered by his state to become French speakers.

It was the earlier revolutionary government that were quite effective in stamping out the various regional languages of France and getting Parisian French to be the single national language (almost) as you say I’m not sure Bonaparte* was that bothered…

* worried about calling politicians by their first name on here…
