Tiktok sleeper indie hits

now i come to think of it, why arent these triggering copyright filters etc. just a matter of time i expect

the kid just played me this, which has apparently been blowing up the last few weeks

love the late 80s sk8 video aesthetic - those sk8 videos always had great quirky indie soundtracks - im kind of glad people are trying reproduce it, it was a good time.

relatedly, I read this interesting piece about obscure indie songs becoming huge hits via the spotify autoplay algorithms the other day - something that must be in play in how these things end up going viral on tiktok (it mentions that the Pavement B-side in question has trended there too, and it likely wouldn't have done if the algorithm hadn't been pushing it)

No need for that - I'm glad to be schooled by teens tbh. There's so much music we're always bound to miss most of it.
I don't even use TikTok so this phenomenon has passed me by. But I pick up on music my teens like, not sure whether it's from TikTok or not, actually I don't think it's things having a resurgance, it's recent stuff, Olivia Rodrigo, Mitski, Girl in Red.

Was Running up that Hill getting it's popularity from TikTok plays, following being used on Stranger Things? Or just more generally?

I think blowing up on tiktok will be part of any big hit these days tbh - not always in good ways, I was reading about some young pop stars who's record labels won't let them release new music until it has a certain amount of tiktok engagement

These minor bands from the 90s/00s - if something gets really popular now do they get a load of royalties and suddenly turn into millionaires at the age of 45, 20 years after giving up making a living from music and getting dull office jobs instead?

they get some royalties, but even millions of streams doesn't add up to that much, and it doesn't seem to me like many of them have managed to bounce it into anything very sustained beyond their viral moment. Maybe next time they do a tour they'll play to 300 rooms instead of 200, and the record label will repress whatever album the tiktok hit was on, but otherwise I don't think it generally makes a huge difference.

Girl in Red and Mitski were brought to my attention.
My daughter seemed a mildly disappointed I thought that some of Mitski's stuff was OK.
Girl in Red came up on my shuffle list today. I thought the Dead Girl in the Pool lyric ' I looked out the window and someones caught my eye. . . there is a dead girl in the pool' . . . until it is later revealed SPOILERS that she is the dead girl in the pool and ruins a slightly twisted Weekend at Bernies style romance.
