TikTok set to be banned in the USA on Sunday

All the "ban" does is force the app stores to remove the app for usa users isn't it?

Still it's something to wind up right wing americans next time they bang on about the first amendment :D

After seeing quite a few critiques of TishTosh nutrition misinformation by sensible YouTubers, I recently relented after being softened up by Google shorts and the equivalent on FB and I found a few vaguely sensible channels just to see what the fuss is about, but as expected it's dreadful stuff.

The thing about tiktok-addled Americans flocking to a much more directly Chinese app instead is mildly interesting, especially how it's literally called Little Red Book, no intention of going near the place myself though.

Thinking about it, it is a great example of how reality can be far stupider than fiction, if I was reading a novel or watching a film where the US government banned an app because of fears about Chinese influence and then the kids started using an app called Little Red Book developed by someone called Mao instead, I'd be thinking "what fucking idiot wrote this shit?"

Some of the anecdotes about American's migration to Red Book are hilarious. Chinese were flabbergasted about American medical bills and the Americans asking about the details of social credit , in a weird way it might break down the propaganda from both governments.

I wonder which goverment will ban it first? :hmm:

The company’s team of in-house censors bans or limits discussion related to thousands of “sensitive” terms, including 546 nicknames for Chinese leader Xi Jinping, according to a leaked database published by China Digital Times, a California-based website focused on Chinese censorship, in 2022.

I might see how fast I can get banned from there :D

The most addictive social media platform I've ever been on.
It bored me almost immediately.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen more than one vid at a time, and that’s just from following links.
Its popularity mystifies me. For a start, there’s way too much stuff overlaid on the screen so you can’t really pay much attention to what’s going on behind it all. Not that it matters as it’s usually either someone dancing badly, making disgusting food or sharing their garbage opinion on something that doesn’t matter.
I’m not 12 years old though. It’s not supposed to be for the likes of me.

When the algorithm gets you right it's good though.

I enjoy it, but never just get people dancing or food videos. I get a lot of social commemtary and capitalism bashing, alternative histories, and news from places and people I wouldn't know of otherwise.

I also have no interest in people’s opinions unless they’re in writing, so there’s that :D

Agree. I used to like going on You Tube rabbit holes but now it is replaced by TikTok.

I often see clips of podcasts, documentaries, songs that I never heard of and learn quite a lot from them.

I wonder how frequently someone gets censored for accidentally using one of the 546 terms without knowing the double meaning?

Americans trying to access TikTok are now getting this message:

The government said it wasn't going to enforce the ban immediately so cutting off service was TikTok's decision

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Saturday that TikTok's warning it was about to go dark was "a stunt".
"We see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take actions in the next few days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday," she said.
"We have laid out our position clearly and straightforwardly: actions to implement this law will fall to the next administration. So TikTok and other companies should take up any concerns with them."

I wonder if the stunt will change anything.

A lot of Americans don't seem to know it's a stunt..
