The Outdoorsy "Sofa".

Had a nice couple of days climbing in North Wales, but sadly today's rain came in much earlier so ended up coming home. Still it was fun to climb in two quite different locations, Hollyhead Mountain and Idwal Slabs. Also had a super keen 22 year girl who boulders at the wall my mate works join us for some multi pitch, was nice to pass some knowledge on, even if I did feel really old at times!

My much-loved Salomon X Ultra 4 mid walking boots leaked to fuckery yesterday, and it was only when I was stuffing them with paper that I realised why - both of them have split in exactly the same place!

Trying to get hold of a replacement pair without remortgaging the house is proving difficult.

Anyone got any experience of the Keen Targhee 3? I need a wide toe box and these are currently £80 on Amazon, but some reviews are saying they have split pretty quickly. I've only had the Salomons since Oct 2020, and only really started using them every weekend a year ago.

Not sure if you use the dreaded FB, but you might get more joy on Outdoor Gear Advice group just because of the reach.

Prices are bonkers now though, even outdoor trainers can be over £150, although I got a "cheap" pair of fell running shoes I'm loving for walking.

I'm avoiding it at the moment tbh. Not great for my mental health.

Urgh. I even tried the dreaded Sports Direct, cos I got my first pair there after trying on pretty much every boot in the shop.

Seems like as soon as any clothing becomes technical it costs a fortune. Had two pairs of climbing shorts in my basket yesterday which totalled 80 quid! Yes branded but I'm going to get some from decathlon instead.

I wore a pair of cheap ass Reboks up Idwal Slabs at the weekend. More comfy then any climbing shorts I've owned.

I'm heading off to Greece next weekend and planning on walking up Mt Olympus (with a night in the refuge) whilst I'm there. Stupidly, I've only just measured my daypack I was going to use and it's to big to fit under the seat with EasyJet. I've also checked the temperature on top at the moment and it's almost freezing, so probably won't do the whole thing in shorts and will need space for warm layers. Rather than pay the extortionate amount they want to put in an overhead locker I've decided just to get another rucksack (you can't have to many right?).

I'm trying on of these as it looks like the back support comes out, so I can roll it smaller. And it's also a dry bag so will get some use on future canoeing trips. :)

The gourdon is a great bag, mine is about ten years old now.

The exterior is more durable than the clips and straps, I've had to do a bit of a fixing job on a couple of them.

That's good to hear. Am I correct that it will roll a bit smaller to fit under the seat?

Oh yeah, if you take the pad out its totally squishable & you can roll the top down a way.

Just wear all your warm bulky layers to board & you can put them in the overhead bin.

I'll be travelling in shorts! I've paid for a 27kg hold bag, so I can take plenty (including poles), its just getting the day pack there as well.

I said last time we were canoeing I wanted something like this, so it's a double win.

Bloody Salomons pinched. Measured the bottom and they're 3/4 cm narrower than my current ones! Got the Keen Targhee 3s, cos they're meant to have a nice wide toebox, and THEY'RE too fucking narrow too!

Anyone recommend hiking boots with wide toe boxes?!

I've got Shrek feet. Freakishly wide. Altburg do wide fitting (if you want traditional boots). Keen have very wide toe box for more of a modern walking shoe.

Cheers. Which Keens? The Targhee 3 was too narrow. I do want boots more than shoes.

Might be best to go to Go Outdoors or somewhere and try a few pairs on? I think they'll price match too, or you just tell them you haven't decided and order them online :hmm:
Last time I tried there, the best I came out with was Peter Storm shoes a size too big. Ok for short walks, but I want a sturdy boot for winter hikes.

I don't know what that size even is 😄

Where do you get the Altburgs from?

It's a pain, but the best thing to do is go to the factory shop - it's at Richmond, north Yorks. They're really good and at just going through all of the boots they've got in all the different fittings and lasts.

I've flipper feet - narrow (quite sexy actually...) heel, and ridiculous, comedy, foot wide toe bit. I look like a hobbit.. my walking books are the Nordkapps and Yan Tans. For both they used a custom foot bed for my heel, and stretched the boots out widthways.

They've had the MOD contract for 'biff feet' for about 25 years - if your feet wouldn't fit in the general issue boots, the MOD would send you up to Richmond to have Altberg fit, or make a set of boots that would do you.

Honestly, they're really good, it's a pain, but it's well worth the effort.

That's a minimum of 4.5 hours round trip! Thanks for the tip, I'll bear it in mind. Fuck of a long way to go though, given I'd be in there for ages too. Urgh. I've just ordered some Merrell Moabs as a last ditch chance at not having to spend hours with an increasingly pissed off shop assistant in a hot sweaty shop.
