The Outdoorsy "Sofa".

I've never really explored Northumberland, which is a glaring gap in my walking knowledge, especially as it's an area some of my ancestors lived in for centuries.

Any recommendations for a waterproof trousers?

I was living off a pair of ultralight ones for a couple of years but in the fight between them and crampons this winter, the crampons definitely won. They were shredded to fuck and had to chuck them.

I use Berghaus Deluge. Cheap enough that if you put a hole in them, it's not to bad, but still half decent.

Outside one?

Paramo Aspira salopettes - they are far too warm for anything non-wintery, but mine have been trashed by crampons and axes every winter for about 20 years, and it's repair and go. They are wonderful for winter mountaineering and walking.

Probably more repair than original now, but they were about £250 then - if I'd bought gote-tex hobbies I'd probably be on my tenth pair by now...

I've got some keela overtrousers as well, they are pretty robust. The uber cheap option is army surplus ones - they come in two types, heavyweight and lightweight. LW is goretex paclite with full length side zips, HW is 3 layer Goretex with zips to the knee. You'll get them for £30 or so on fleabay. Relatively baggy fit compared to most civvy ones, not elegant, but cheap as chips.

I’ve recently had my Paramo jacket totally fail on me so, I’m shy of going for their strides even though they were at the top of my shopping list a few months ago.

I have a pair of Rab Fuse II. They're pretty basic but have served me well, including three days walking through Scotland in the pissing rain a couple of years ago.

There’s probably a newer version of then now.

I currently have some crappy crag hoppers ones that are waterproof and very hot, some goretex Berghaus which seem to leak along the seams, and some super Montane ones that are frankly complete shit.

The ultralight ones I destroyed this winter were fucking amazing tbh. Montane Podium 15 denier.

15! Wafer thin but elasticated around the ankles and waist making a good seal. They were uber breathable and super comfy.

98 grams and pack down to the size of an apple. Brilliant.

I'm weighing up a new do it all jacket as current Rab synthetic is looking a little sorry for itself. Front runners are a montane via sport pursuit and a Mountain Equipment from Cotswold. Get paid Friday and I suspect I'll go for the ME.

I recently got a Rab Firewall which is excellent. Here’s me in said jacket and aforementioned Montane strides, acting like a twat.

Yep those are the ones. They work perfectly when it's not really raining. Perhaps a few minutes of drizzle and some breeze. The same conditions where no rain trousers would do just as good a job.

I've got some great Montane eVent trousers. 10 years old and still in great shape. Comfy enough, and tailored enough, to wear all day.

Don't think they make them anymore.

Question please - do hill walkers still use paper OS maps, or do they use the online digital versions now?

(Asking for a friend)

Always carry map and compass. However, since using the OS Maps app I’ve never dug a map out of my bag.

Plus the Harveys BMC maps are best. Weatherproof and easier to read the lay of the land.

Just bought this from sport pursuit as a bit of retail therapy:

Having a change from Rab and this hit the right point/appealed to the bargain hunter in me.
