Watched this tonight. It’s actually pretty good and as the reviews have it, it is the best Terminator movie since the second one. Admittedly that’s not saying much as the previous three films were crap and it isn’t as good as the first two films. It was a good choice to ignore the last three movies and make this a direct sequel to T2.
The biggest problem with this movie is, that it follows the formula of the first two movies too closely, even if it does throw in a few twists. The second problem is that the new "bad" Terminator is no more than a bit of an upgrade from T2. Its best qualities are that it remembers that this was always Sarah Connor‘s story and it has its heart in the right place. That may also be why it flopped because otherwise it’s a better blockbuster than most right now. I’ve read up on a few forum posts and the incel crowd ain’t to happy with this having three kick ass female leads. It can also be seen as a bit of a fuck you to Trump, by having the new Sarah Connor-style character, who gets to save the world, be a Mexican.
Arnie only enters the movie half way in but once he does, he is a lot of fun. Mackenzie Davies plays the lead character here as a cyborg from the future and she is great. Been a fan of hers since her breakout role in the drama series Catch and Halt Fire. It’s good to see Linda Hamilton back after a woefully miscast Emilia Clarke in the dreadful Terminator Gynysys and she appears to be the rare Hollywood actress of her age untouched by the surgeons knife. She looks great, is as kick-ass as ever and it made me aware how rarely we get to see female lead actors in their 60s, without totally smooth skin in American films.
