The new look IMDb

i don't like all the pictures. i liked it when it was minimal.
and i wish they'd get rid of the ratings system. it's pointless. it's almost made me hate democracy.

yes, this and iplayer seemed to fuck up at the same time. not all change is good, and iplayer is the worst website upgrade i've ever met.

I hate that you seem to have to scroll down for ages to get to the reviews and they've got rid of the review summary line too.
The big pictures of the main actors is annoying.

I think if you're a member you can set it back to the old format in settings.

I quite like the ratings on IMDB, at least for more obscure stuff.

i have a macbook and am using safari, yet i get the new one.
is xtube something rude? i suspect it is!

A few months ago when the IMDB started to push its 'pro' section more, the normal section became all but useless, missing out loads of actors and occasionally getting episode titles wrong. The new layout is like an advert, not a page you'd actually want to use.

i rarely use iplayer on my laptop, prefer to use it on the telly. what's changed?

They've managed the quite amazing feat of making it less functional and harder to navigate. As far as I can tell you can no longer just browse a list of a channel's programmes, only navigate via the weekly schedule. Possibly they're wriggling out of archiving anything for more than a week. 4od's got better though.

really? i used it for the first time ever last week and thought it was terrible. godawful, blocking picture quality and not very user friendly at all. i'm glad i have a telly with a virgin box. couldn't absolutely rely on iplayer/4od for a satisfying watching experience. haven't even tried itv's.

Oh the player is as shit as it ever was, it's just a bit easier to navigate.

I don't like IMDB either now, its blocky and not very streamlined , the i-player is naff too.

Thats my all important critical review :)

I only use it for the ratings which are usually reliable.. dont mind the new design but they could have gone a bit further i think

They seem to even out. basically i dont bother dloading a movie if its less than a 7 on there.

Not to say that some great films don't have high ratings, etc, but you'll be missing out on a quite a few good films and you'll watch a lot of really bland ones.

jeez! maybe they even out more with big films, but you get great films on there with shit scores and vice versa. it's more illuminating reading the reviews, cos then you get an indication of the tastes of the reviewer at least. i would never trust just IMDb.

i don't and i'm an idiot.
most of the reviews on there are written by chumps.
i don't rating are ever the best way to judge whether you'll like a film or not.
everyone's tastes and expectations are different.
at least with reviews you get a taste of personality that might help you judge.

I never go by general ratings from anything, but quite a few member reviews on Imdb are surprisingly insightful. They can be useful for very obscure or brand new films for which it's difficult to track down information or reviews.

I generally write something on there when I've seen a preview of a film that hasn't come out yet and I'm only one of a small handful of contributers. More often than not I'll write about a film I liked.

The message boards on Imdb seem to attract an amazing amount of idiocy though. They make me lose all faith in humanity.

one comment on pulp fiction made me laugh out loud: why doesn't it start at the beginning? fair point really

i despise the ratings - i think they're completely unhelpful.

The reviews are a lot more useful than the ratings, but I do like them - I also like rating movies in there :) It's not just idiots who rate the movies you know... :p

I always go there if I'm looking for something to watch on Virgin Media and I have a big list of movies from which to chose from.

Also the ratings can be useful if you keep a list of movies you watch (I've been keeping one for a few years now) - you can sort your movies by ratings, and so on. Sometimes you watch a movie again and realise you don't rate it as highly anymore...

i always look at rotten tomatoes or my time out guide.
i think x out of 10 ratings are rather pointless

how are they reliable? they're voted for by idiots!

Oi!

I vote for films on Imdb and I've written a few reviews as well.

Me also.

most of the reviews on there are written by chumps.

Though TBF that is true.

This is also.

This is also, also. The IMDb boards seem to think they're in a championship title fight with YouTube comment threads.

I rate because it helps me recall films I have seen but might otherwise forget - I use the MyMovies function and sort by rating so I can remind myself of films that particularly impressed me (or, by reverse sort, those I really need to avoid ever seeing again). I don't really pay attention to the weighted average ratings.

I have found some very incisive reviews and board comments on IMDb. They may be few and far between, but they are there...

Overall I quite like the new IMDb look - still shonky, but a mild improvement. Not keen on swapping the quick links from the left to the right sidebar though!

Dammit, you snuck that in there as I was typing!
