I was thinking of ways to achieve this, and decided it might be best to see one in action before putting too much thought into it.
The only indication that it has switched to the secondary source is the red indicator in the middle. The lever doesn't turn of its own accord, it has to be turned manually. So the only way to receive a notification that it'd switched inputs (without opening it up) would be to monitor the colour of the spy glass.

Mine most definitely switches over of its own accord - fats the whole point of them. Some, but not mine, do actually have an electrical contact closure to indicate reserve supply.
