The lonely tech post thread.

Actually that Philips lightbulb is weird.
It has its own WiFi identity, has no Bluetooth and was a right pain to set up.
I don't buy anything that isn't Zigbee.

Well, I say that...I ordered two Sonoff relay controllers from AliExpress, and they turn out to be Matter/WiFi. Still a breeze to connect compared to Philips stuff (and, TBH, IKEA Tradfri stuff can be a bit incantation-prone).

Was pleased to find Yubico keys have dropped in price since I last looked, so was only £25. I wish more consumer level stuff supported them. I do feel having so much stuff authenticated against my phone is a bit of a worry if something happens to it.

I can't help but wonder if they'd actually suit older people who don't use smartphones as much. Text based authentication is a pain and hate it when it's the only option.

is your microwave on there?
your fridge?
toilet?

I'd probably be way more up for toys if I didn't have to share my living space, and why in the end I went for a Google Nest Thermostat and removed the OPNsense router when it crashed twice.

It's almost guaranteed the time my Plex setup will decide to misbehave is when I'm full of food, tired, pissed and about to watch a film with my OH.

well that was interesting

Had a power cut yesterday and my second monitor stopped working. Checked on the web and general consensus was that it's fucked I'll have to get another one. So I thought I'd just try swapping monitor cables (difficult to trace which is which from the rat's nest at the back of the puter) , still fucked. I swapped them back and tried the monitor's VGA socket - luckily I still had a DVI-D to VGA adapter because it was originally set up as that but I'd converted to all digital to see whether it gave a better display (it had done, a bit).

Switched the computer on and still nothing on the monitor and my main monitor also looked fucked, just a very faint Linux Mint symbol on the screen and I couldn't enter the password. So main monitor now fucked, too

But hold on if it's displaying LM symbol it has to be working somehow so I switched the second monitor on and changed the input setting to VGA ... and it all works - that one was acting as primary which is why the LM symbol was greyed out.

So all working again

Sounds horribly fustrating, but glad you got there.

Interesting approach - worth keeping an eye on :)

Tech operators in China have been given a deadline to rectify issues with recommendation algorithms, as authorities move to revise cybersecurity regulations in place since 2021.
A three-month campaign to address “typical issues with algorithms” on online platforms was launched on Sunday, according to a notice from the Communist Party’s commission for cyberspace affairs, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and other relevant departments.

The campaign, which will last until February 14, marks the latest effort to curb the influence of Big Tech companies in shaping online views and opinions through algorithms – the technology behind the recommendation functions of most apps and websites.

System providers should avoid recommendation algorithms that create “echo chambers” and induce addiction, allow manipulation of trending items, or exploit gig workers’ rights, the notice said.

They should also crack down on unfair pricing and discounts targeting different demographics, ensure “healthy content” for elderly and children, and impose a robust “algorithm review mechanism and data security management system”.

this concerning? (well not for LibreOffice users as far as I know)

It is not a secret that Microsoft's Office has Connected Experiences which analyze content created by users. However, according to @nixCraft, an author of Cyberciti.biz. Microsoft's Connected Experiences feature automatically gathers data from Word and Excel files to train the company's AI models. This feature is turned on by default, meaning user-generated content is included in AI training unless manually deactivated. However, this deactivation is a very convoluted process. Microsoft has yet to comment on the information, so take it with a grain of salt.

This default setting allows Microsoft to use documents such as articles, novels, or other works intended for copyright or commercial purposes without explicit consent. The implications are significant for creators and businesses relying on Microsoft Office for proprietary work, as their data could become part of the company's AI development. For this reason, anyone concerned about protecting their intellectual property or sensitive information should take action immediately.

To do so, users must actively opt out by finding and disabling the feature in settings. The process requires unchecking the box 'Turn on optional connected experiences' that is enabled by default.

On a Windows PC, the steps include going to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences and unchecking the box. Seven steps to disable a critical feature that is turned on automatically seems very convoluted.

Microsoft's approach mirrors a broad trend in the tech industry, where other companies have introduced similar features to train their AI models. While all AI models are trained on something generated by humans, doing so without their consent is unethical, to put it mildly.

It does seem so. Without reading further I assume this is "just" on personal subscriptions (does anyone do this) because I can't imagine it going down well with corporate customers.

Anyone got any Azure books/courses/labs that I can have a look at? Really need to start understanding the networking and how I link it with external services.

I suspect the books I've got aren't what your after. But if you tell me the course code I can have a look in certain places. If you like those video course things Udemy is often cheap, but I struggle with them as a learning style.

Is Azure itself or Entra? If Azure you can get free credits on sign up. Sadly MS stopped the dev tenancy for 365, but you can create one for free. Sorry if thats really obvious stuff for you?

Have just completed the Google Cyber Security course. It's pitched at a good level for an intro I reckon. 6 months is generous, I've done it in 2 but have been out of work. Helped I wasn't a total newbie too.

Going to carry on. Just looking at an intro to AI on Coursera. Mainly just to get some concepts straight, rather than using it for programming actual stuff, which is way beyond me.

Cheers. It's Azure I'm interested in and I have no intention of doing a cert for it, just want to try and get my head around the inter VM networking and connecting stuff to on-prem networks. I might just have a go at using the free credits first and see how I get on.

Depending on who you work for, if you make noises about using it for testing, I've heard you sometimes get given a lot more...

How do people here dispose of old tech stuff? Today I disposed of an monitor, non smart but working TV and a lot of cables at the local tip. Tried to give the TV away to a neighbour but they were not interest in it.

If it's of little value I put it on Facebook market place for free or a small amount. Then dispare about humanity.

I've got a large number of serial and parallel printer cables, old format tape deck and speaker cables and the like. I did read that there's a shortage of copper and they want people to recycle them but I'm not sure if the local 'recycling' centre just sends them to landfill.

Amassed into decent quantities it has a price per tonne - even signal and data cables...
Electricians save it up and get bulk prices...
Small scrappers will take cables...
I had to dispose of a not inconsiderable quantity ...
