The Bridge (tonight, 10pm more4)

yeah it was...

I think, as a documentary, it really suffers from the lack of a central narrator to draw it all together. So far, it just seems to be a string of talking heads- with sad stories, to be sure, but somehow it's not really engaging me, other than a few short segments- the kite-surfer talking about the juxtaposition between his celebration of life as he surfs, while another man is chosing to end his.

that final scene where Gene jumps is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. He just climbs up on the rail, stands with his back to the water and spreads his arms like Jesus, and for a second he is glorious; and then he lets himself fall backwards into the river.
I cried buckets. I still feel upset- by the end of the film, you feel you kind of know him, and it's the last thing you want him to do

(though obviously, you know that that's what he does)

Overall, not a great film- it's got a few flaws, but in parts it's deeply moving. worth watching.

you can see it on google...it is really sad. :(

Why don't the city council put up bigger barriers/fence to stop people jumping from the bridge or set up a 24 hour crisis centre near the bridge. Atleast some people could talk about what is happening to them and that could be enough to stop one or more of the people before they take drastic action.

they wanted to do that at the Humber bridge here, but apparently putting up higher barriers would effect the safety of the bridge and when a 24hr service was offered, the bridge people said no. they even said no to some metal signs with the Samaritans number on.

Obviously it's a very sad subject, but every time I see this thing referenced I always get really excited, then disappointed when I realise that it is not, in fact, a dramatization of the superb Iain Banks book by the same name.

personally, I thought that was his worst book. really boring- the only good bit was the first time he lies to his therapist. that bit's utterly brilliant. the rest is tosh. (imo)
