The Bourne Identity

With Danny on this. Watched it about a year ago becasue Id heard it was a decent thriller. But its the same old hollywood action movie hookum. And Matt Damon being all unrelentlingly tense and aggressive got on my tits very quickly.
Day of the Jackal - (the original Edward Fox one) now theres a proper thriller. You dont need an explosion, car chase and/or fight scene every two minutes to make a film gripping and exciting.

You have to respect the Bourne Identity because it pretty much killed old James Bond. There was no way they were going back to last years of gadget heavy CGI crap that the last few Brosnan outings descended into.

Bourne might not have been the best and the most polished but it pretty much reinvented the action movie for the 2000. It just took Paul Greengrass to push the trilogy further while Doug Liman made Mr and Mrs Smith, and Jumper.

The 1972 Jackal film was a recounting of a true story and that particular version was accepted as being closest to the actual events. Not a fair comparison.

Hitchcock? Steady on guys, no-one's saying Greengrass is one of the greatest directors of all time either.

Neither are the films ' the same old hollywood action hokum'...they primarily take place in Europe and unlike most hollywood ones the majority of the Bourne actions sequences are close-in, confined, with little in the way of pyrotechnics or dolby 7.1

I quite like them.

.

No it fiction. Its convincing becasue its rooted in detailed realism and features real people and events - but the core story is fiction all the same.

Day of the Jackal is a great film: I enjoyed it for its understated tension etc.

I liked Bourne Identity as well, for the fast-paced action, enjoyable locations etc.
