The 1975

Previously a band I'd only occasionally dip into, I've slowly grown into being quite enamoured by them.

Sure Matt Healy can be a dick, but anyone whose self aware enough to describe himself as “ironically woke… post-coke, average skinny bloke calling his ego imagination" is worth a listen.

What's the urban verdict?

I find their music a bit boring tbh, with the exception of a couple of tracks (N was into them a while back so I've heard a lot of their stuff).

Good on them for that same sex kiss business though, I mean perhaps they should have turned down a gig in a country without gay rights in the first place, but maybe turning up and making a bold move is a good statement and might speak more in terms of a positive message to their fans there?

I shouldn't love them, but I do. And I blame Spotify. For some reason, a few years ago, The Sound kept popping up on my playlist and after a couple of times I had to check what the hell I was listening to, because it sounded pretty great. I dipped deeper and got a bit hooked. Then my eldest daughter said you should see them live, they’re amazing, so I did, and they were. Yes, he’s a bit of a dick, but he’s some frontman.

And while I understand he’s responsible for the lyrics, the songs, toons themselves are down to the drummer. Hence the shared Novello Awards.

I find them pretty normal ordinary pedestrian myself. Nothing offensively bad not interesting either.

Not playing Malaysia might have been difficult (for routing or contractual reasons) or maybe they didn’t realise how backward they are about LGBT rights til the dates were booked or something.

I imagine they might be a young LGBT person somewhere, in Malaysia or elsewhere, who saw or heard about this and it being a really important moment for them. Maybe more significant for them than knowing a band had refused to play their country.

Healy has been a general dick in the past although apparently he’s now taken inventory and is cleaning house.

I don’t get them at all and I have tried because friends like them. Their music is fine but nothing I can get excited about and Healy just comes across as such a twat.

I’ve heard lots of explanations and apologies for his behaviour but ultimately he’s said some awful things and behaved really badly. Either he means it or he’s trying to provoke but either way it’s pathetic.

Post up their best track and I'll tell you what I think.
Yes this. As was said above, I have a vague image of them being a rock band, but the very limited amount I have heard is modern BGT warbley pop. Trouble is, everything I have heard drifts straight out of my head. I am sure I listened to them only yesterday when replying to Editor in another thread where they featured, but I can't really remember what I heard.

I've not heard about any of the singer being a twat controversy, I probably travel in different news circles.

Why are they the 1975? Can't be their birth year, I assume they are too young.

I haven't listened to their music because I can't fucking stand that slimy prick Healy.

Daughter two saw them a few times about eight years ago. She met their mums at one gig, who were lovely. I heard their music at this time and thought they were a reasonable band for girls in their mid to late teens to be into. I did not disapprove.

I haven’t followed their music since.

Yes we the jury are sat and ready to proceed.

I dont like the majority of music tbh, but with popular acts usually I can at least understand why people like it even if i think very little of it....my 30 seconds of catching bits of the 1975 so far make me file them under why the fuck are this lot so big?

Okay a tune called The Sound was mentioned on the thread...this is it....73 million views on YouTube....just checked Spotify and a fair few tunes of theirs are on around half a billion streams, one on its way to a billion

--that ones unlistenable for me, anything better?

The two songs above are unimpressive to the point of intolerability. Not going to say that I don’t know what the fuss is all about, as I wasn’t aware of any fuss. First I’ve heard of them.

I love them, absolutely love them. I understand why people don’t, I think they are a marmite band despite their general popularity but I think they make cracking music. I am listening to Frail State of Mind as I type.

I think Healy is a bit of prat really but he’s not a deliberately harmful person.

Teenage daughter was really into them for a while and Mrs [62] likes them but I don't get it either. They don't bother me, though.

Seems to be a theme developing here...

I'd only heard of them because Matt Healy is Denise Welch and Tim Healy's son. Just listened to a couple of their songs - yes, they sound very boy bandish / Duran Duranish to me. Nothing special.

I dont hate them as they are quite funky, just too poppy for me. DuranDuran is a quite similar feel thing.

This one is dreadful. Worse than I imagined they would be.
. . . and I have a soft spot for Alphabeat.

I don’t actually think he’s as much of a dick as he comes across but the idea that he’s challenging something or making any kind of worthwhile statement is laughable.

The staggering around on stage drunk and all that is just embarrassing too.

You see - sad to say - I could imagine acting that way myself if I was his age, that successful and could get away with it.

It was this video that made me give them another go:

He's talking about this song, Which is great.

He’s in his 30s now so not exactly a kid.

Would you also be boasting about getting caught wanking to ‘ghetto gaggers’?

He had apologised for some of it but still.

As I said I don’t actually think he’s really how he comes across and people seem to like him but I can’t get past it even if I loved their music.
