TGV HST Bullet Train porn

The Japanese maglev will be amazing once they finish it. In 2045. (Tokyo-Nagoya segment to open in 2027)

Top speed 500km/h. The trains look fucking ridiculous mind

I hope somewhere there's a despot in a shithole republic that's built a really pointy fast-looking train for prestige, yet with the technological equivalent of an old pacer DMU on the inside. A bit like those counties where they have a grand 8-lane freeway outside the presidential palace that runs for half a mile in each direction before reverting to unpaved tracks.

The Talgo series 102 is nicknamed The Duck due to the design outline of its loco

Admittedly not the prettiest high speed loco out there, but apparently very low-noise. They were built by Talgo for 350 kph service, though sadly RENFE decided against upgrading the line to accommodate that speed, so they operate at 'only' 300 kph.

Having said that, my favourite one has to be the Siemens/ Velaro 103 class. Not too pointy, not too flashy, but just the perfect dimensions and design, while utilising usable passenger space much better. And also capable of of 350 kph service if RENFE would have it.

A variant of which is now running on Eurostar

I seem to remember the "nose must be yellow" rules for UK trains have been relaxed, which means the HS2 trains won't have to be so garish.

It makes sense. Surely modern high powered headlights are more than sufficient in making an approaching train noticeable regardless of the colour of the front of the loco.

I can't get excited about any vehicle that doesn't have a nice friendly face, round headlights etc. These insectoid fast things not doing it for me.
What is your take on the Disney film Cars' controversy? IMO everyone knows a car's eyes are its headlights, and Disney's portrayal of them being on the windscreen was not only an aberration but ultimately responsible for the film's failure.

That and modern purpose built lines won't have level crossings, and maintenance won't be undertaken when the line is live so no people on the track looking out for them. One of the reasons HS2 makes sense compared to upgrading existing lines (which have much greater maintenance needs).

They'll probably still have to have passenger doors in contrasting colours to the rest of the train (something required for the benefit of the partially sighted) which spoils the go-faster stripes on a lot of modern stock. Maybe they could do that bit with magic colour changing paint by the time HS2 gets built.

It's all very well and I enjoy looking at these photos too but how good are the regular railway services in these countries?

One problem with high speed is it tends to suck resources from medium speed local services which is where the real benefits of railways lie.

This 2nd generation TGV rumbled into Munich Hauptbahnhof when I was there at New Year. :)

Forgive the bumping of this thread but I have just come back from Marseille on one of those, just over three hours non-stop from St Charles (and what a station that is) to the Gare de Lyon.

Easily the best train I've ever been on - great view, great comfort (from the top deck in first class), even the guards were fantastic.

I love the two deck TGVs. Proper travel.
