TfL funding crisis

Crispy

The following psytrance is baṉned: All
Westminster are really putting the screws on Khan and TfL

£1bn in return for extending the C charge to the Circulars and hiking fares. Not going down well.

It's Thatcher vs. GLA all over again isn't it?
This brings the area of the congestion charge zone to that of the proposed low emission zone. There will be a lot of support from within TfL for this.

Will this mean an outer/inner congestion zone ? I'm not in it atm, but will be if they extend to the North Circular , so does that mean no congestion charge at all for car owners within the new zone (which would surely reduce the revenue) or pay a charge to drive in the outer zone and another charge if you go into the central zone.

Can't see removing over 60s free travel being popular (given the Tory voting demographic)

The howls of rage from car owners will be heard from space.
The residents' exemption is currently closed to new applicatants, and I don't see how it could be expanded to the whole Outer zone and still actually reduce car use. It's a BIG step to take. Tons of infrastructure required too.

An inner and outer zone is a good idea imo. Exemptions for residents in each zone, but not for outer residents to drive into the inner zone. And ramp up the cost of the inner zone to £50 a day for private vehicles, there really is no need for them to be there at all.

Tbf , as an outer zone kinda guy , I have no objections to paying to go into the inner zone , provided I don't have to pay in the outer zone where I live.

Its surprising that the govt are insisting on this at all.

Maybe , but they aren't exactly putting a strong candidate against him. They can only win in London with a rock star Tory like Boris . Bailey has been anonymous, he's a sacrificial lamb.

They don't want the Tory candidate to win, because everyone could blame him for stuff. It's much better to be able to tell 8 million people at the next general election that all their ills are due to a Labour mayor.

that's a particularly stupid post when there's several years between the next mayoral election and the subsequent general election by which time no one in london will trace all, most or even many of their woes to city hall but to a street not unadjacent to whitehall

I think it's more of a case of not being to find a candidate who could win.

It's to make Khan unpopular
I've said it before but the online vitriol machine against Khan is horrid, it's all low level simple blame him for everything with a racist undertone but it's quite effective. The fact he is very average and doesn't seem to kick back much doesn't help.

He really needs to come out swinging and start making the gov own this stuff. The next council along here (Tory) took central gov funding for cycling etc and have made a bit of a mess of the local high street - hastily put in crap cycle lane that doesn't fit very well into the rest of the infrastructure and buggers up the traffic lights. Nothing to do with TfL apparently but from some of the local facebook comments you'd think Khan had come along and installed it personally.

What's it effective at? Khan had a 20 point lead last time I looked.

SK had already set his chin and commenced plans for the extended LEZ. It will make a huge difference in air pollution. He has priced in the fall out and knows he will still win.

This move is just grease for his elbow.

By the way, has there been any update on when free child travel will be suspended? I googled but could only find suggestions that October half term is pencilled in for this?

I reckon this would make no difference at all to congestion. Hardly any vehicles driving in the current CC zone are private vehicles of people who live outside the zone. Its all just delivery vehicles and construction workers (both of whom have no choice) plus taxis, private hire and chauffeurs.

Yeah, I'd agree. There's no reason to drive into zone 1, but plenty of reasons to drive around zones 2/3

Worst of it avoided, but £160m "savings" still required to plug the gap
