Tennis

Really interesting little interview with Murray, talking about how after losing Wimbledon three weeks before the Olympics he apparently accepted he may never win a slam. And also how his first round loss in Beijing affected him as well, and the fact he couldn't make up for it for four years motivated him.

Murray into his second final and guaranteed silver or gold

He'll face the winner of del Potro v Nadal, with the latter already with a Rio gold to his name.

I hadn't realised till last night, but they've just withdrawn the ranking points a gold has been worth since 2004. Might have something to do with some of these surprising losses
I don't think so. If that mattered to them, they wouldn't be there in the first place. Slightly odd decision to take away the points, but they were only 750 for the winner, which ranks it below the Masters series tournaments.

Nadal del Potro one set all. I do like del Potro. Great to see him back.

Fuck me that atmosphere is intense!

The tennis crowds have been rowdy for the whole tournament but this is something else. Anne Keothavong's brother in the umpire chair, doing what he can...

Wow

Argentinians not popular in Brazil. :D
I was trying to think if the Brits have a nation they'd support any opponent of. I think most are long over the Germany thing, but maybe the Australians? Even then, i think it's generally only if we have a dog in the fight and would never be like this.

He's very polite, isn't he. Probably too polite.
To be honest, how much can be do? I don't know if his Spanish and Portuguese go much beyond "please" and "thank you", but even if he could direct a light opera in both languages the crowd could still ignore him.

Does he have the power to disqualify both and award the gold to Murray? :hmm:

tbh in tennis, there isn't any equivalent. Foreign players get support according to individual flair/charisma. And you can't not like the way del Potro plays tennis.

eta
plus there's the coming back from adversity thing with del potro. You'd think that might get him support.

Mens final is in the 3rd set. Just found out its 3 sets to win, unlike the other rounds. Might not be able to stay up for it.
