Tennis

Lord Camomile

Yipchaa!
Britain had a decent time of it so far, Edmunds and Watson through, with the latter's through in the doubles with Konta.

Super besties

With thre rowing cancelled, the tennis has also been delayed everywhere except centre court, where Dustin Brown is on court. Nowhere on bloody TV, though :(

Del Potro, who faces Djokovic later, spent 40 minutes stuck in a lift without reception! Had to be rescued by some passing Argentine handball players!

So, lots of drama overnight. The Murray brothers go out courtesy of two tie breaks, as does Djokovic, who has been very open about how much it would mean to him to win gold for Serbia and walked off the court in tears :(

I was sceptical about tennis at the Olympics. Still not sure it should be there, but all the top players have totally embraced it, which is great to see. Likely now that neither Djoko nor Federer will ever win it. (But we can also be sure that neither would swap their French Open title for a gold.)

Great to see del Potro back after all his troubles.

List of past winners since reintroduction isn't exactly a pantheon of the greats, mind you. Mecir, Rosset, Massu - not a grand slam between them. Up to and including 2004, the Olympics was not a big event as many top players did not play. So it took 20 years for the Olympics to become accepted by everyone as a big event.

England famously didn't take part in one of the first football World Cups because they didn't deem it worthy of them. Sometimes it takes a while for things to build prestige, but look at the way the top players are treating it now. They all want it, for themselves and their country.

Yep, definitely now. But only since 2008, tbh. This is basically the third Olympics that has been a big event.

I know everyone else was watching the gymnastics and/or diving, but Jo Konta just came through an epic three hour match to get into the QFs!

I don't fully understand the Olympics remit. I mean with all these professional players. I thought the Olympics were for amateur sport people?

Have you just woken up from the 1980s? ;)

Not been a ban on pros for quite a while now. They're not paid to compete, but professionals are now allowed in.

Williams just served 5 double faults in one game! The last one just looked pathetic. And she just looks distraught, lost. Something is very up.

I hadn't realised till last night, but they've just withdrawn the ranking points a gold has been worth since 2004. Might have something to do with some of these surprising losses
