Tell me about Plex

So if I install Plex on my PC, I can access all my media files from my nexus, yeah? Can I also stream to my PS3? Does it need a good connection or is my shitty powerline connection good enough? Will it work on my TV (Samsung non-smart but does have an internet connection)? Is there chromecast support? What about connection remotely?

Basically, is it any good?

Erm, I have it but I can't tell you anything useful. I just press buttons on my mobile for a remote control and it works.
Sorry! :D

If you have it on your pc and setup properly…..you will be able to access everything from in and out of the home on your nexus.

As for the tv and ps3, i don't know….. i stream stuff to my iPhone/ipad and then airplay to my apple tv…..

It certainly was very cool being able to watch lizard lick towing (don't judge) in a crappy Novotel in France on my ipad.
My kids have a nexus each and my husband has a samsung tablet, we can all watch something different at the same time.
Basically we never, ever have to talk to each other.:thumbs::facepalm:

I have it and do the same as sim667. What I can't get it to do though is stream sopcast to my ipad so I can use Apple TV to watch football on the big screen

Dunno about PS3 (but probably) and if it's not a smart TV then probably not - why would it have Internet connection if it's not a a smart TV??
Anyway, if you have Chromecast it'll work through that.

I thought powerline connectors were faster than wifi? My YouView box works though a powerline adapter so they are definitely capable of streaming HD video.

Never used it remotely but it is a feature, I guess it depends on the bandwidth at each end.

I have plex server set up on a linux dedicated server that I also use for other stuff (torrenting, web dev).

From this I can stream/cast content on the server to any device with a plex client: chromecast, phone, laptop etc. anywhere in the world that has a good enough internet connection.

As I use this server for all my torrents I rarely need to download a media torrent, I just add the torrent to the server, update the plex library and stream it to whatever over plex.

For me it's the best solution for this.

Its a Samsung that has an Ethernet port. It can stream from a NAS and can do a few things like iPlayer but it doesnt seem to have a huge selection of apps and doesnt have a browser or twitter/facebook stuff. I'll check, but I doubt it does Plex

Depends on a lot of factors. Mine is in a building outside (shed/office thing we had built) so the power lines are shite.

I think I'll probably get a chromecast anyway and then stream to the TV that way. PS3 is unsupported by the looks of it. I've seen some people say you can use the browser to access the server, but as most of the stuff I watch is pirated, Cinavia wont like it I'm sure.

You can also log into plex via a web interface on any computer if you've got an account

I installed Plex yesterday on my PC to stream to my PS3. Previously I was using PS3 Media Server, which was ok but it didnt have a browser interface. I have also used Serviio, which is similar to PS3MS but gives streaming access to web media.

I like Plex because it uses Movie db to scrape info for your library and it has a lot of the functionality of Xbox Media Centre.

Will your PS3 play pirate/non-DRM files? I've read that Cinavia wont let it and it will fail after a short time.

Also, I've organised all my video files into separate folders but it can't see half my stuff. It also sees some stuff in 3 different folders.

I use Plex on my desktop at home to allow me to stream any downloaded videos to my chromecast using just the €3 paid app (don't need plex subscription or any of that). Occasionally a particular video file will be stuttery and make me curse, but usually all is well (might also be the PC doing something in the background, I'm too lazy to check).

The default setting of trying to match all my video files annoyed me because it only showed ones it matched, and so I didn't use it for ages at first. Then I realised there are "library settings" where you change that, and now I'm happy.

It doesn't show stuff it can't match as default, if you change the library type (have a little hunt, I can't remember how to off the top of my head) it won't try to match anymore but will show everything.

bump...

I've been loving Plex more and more since I've purchased a 3TB Seagate Personal Cloud NAS to host all my media. It has synced very nicely to my Samsung Smart TV and is basically like having a personal Netflix.

The only thing nagging me now is enabling remote access via my BT Home Hub 5. I've tried everything but can't seem to make the app accessible from the outside. Just by chance are there any experts who can help? I've googled and gone through various walkthrough's but still I can't make it happen.

Have you logged onto the plex website? When you do that and make sure that it's all using the same user/pass it should figure it all out itself, as long as you can access the internet it should work.

I've not tried connecting remotely, but I'd assume you need to portforward port 32400 to the NAS/Plex server.

Did anyone ever get the football/cricket working? I tried a few channels (FilmOn, IPTV) but they didn't have any sky sports feeds.

yeah I've logged in remotely, but the 'server is unavailable' when I'm outside my own network. I've tried port forwarding using this guide here.

BT HUB 5 - not sharing with friends solution

but it doesn't seem to fix it. I'm afraid to start messing about too much when I don't really know what I'm doing.

I think that you have to pay a subscription to make Plex work outside of your home network.

Yeah, me too. I have bought both the android and ios apps, but that is because I want to play on those devices and not have to cast all the time.
