Tax Return Question

Sorry if this has been covered before.

I work in a dayjob and am paid BACs. I am under PAYE. But I registered as a freelancer because I’ve taken up acting and voiceover work.

Aside from a tiny bit of TV work and a corporate V/O. I’ve done nothing else, apart from my dayjob.

Is there any advice or methodology for filling in a tax return?

Any resources?

Sorry to be a pain.

When did you do it and how much did you get?

Call 0300 200 3310 and ask them if you're registered to file. Have your national insurance number. They're open til 4pm tomorrow (Sunday)

Are you registered for self assessment?

You’ll need to stick in the info on your 2017-18 P60 for your day job along with any income/expenses for the freelance work for the same period. Then it’ll work it out for your.

If your freelance earnings are less than £6k then you should be eligible for an exemption on class 2 NI too.

If you do need to submit a self assessment, you need to do it by the end of this month to avoid getting fined. I've had to call HMRC lots of times in the last couple of years and they are surprisingly helpful. Call at 8am if you can and you'll get through pretty quickly.

There is a “do you need to do a tax return” online quiz on the hmrc site - iirc £800 will not tip you over. Don’t have the link right now but will post it if I can find it.
