Syriana

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Anyone else seen this, what did you think? I quite liked it, nicely tied up by the end without being too contrived. Wasn’t really that much of an eye opener due to many years of reading books by Chomsky etc but still nice bit of affirmation of a world view.

The downside to it was it was a bit impersonal but I guess that was to stop the characters getting in the way of the message. Far better than Traffic (which I thought was shite) too!

I thought it was very good and gave an intriguing view of the oil business, highlighting the faults of many of the people involved and not particularly biased against America as I thought it might have been.

I haven't read Chomsky nor others with similar stories to tell, however, after seeing this, I am keen to read the book on which it is based, See No Evil.

I found it quite difficult to work out where it was all going for the first hour but, as you say, it came together towards the end.

As has been mentioned many times, I too thought it was similar to Traffic in the way that the story unfurled. However, I don't agree with your view that Traffic was shite. Although it was 5 years ago that I saw Traffic, I seem to remember it being a very intelligent story that again highlighted certain issues that generally aren't portrayed by the Hollywood motion picture industry.

There was some very good acting in it, although I'm not sure that I felt that George Clooney was worthy of his Oscar win. I guess it was more to do with the fact that he has had a very good year being involved in getting this and Good Night, and Good Luck. made

I noticed in the cast list, Bob Baer, on whose book the film is based. According to IMDB, he is CIA Security Officer #2

I quite like the fact that Clooney said last night that he put on weight to match Bob Baer but that Baer lost weight as George Clooney was going to be portraying a character like him!

Good to see Dr Bashir from Deep Space 9 in a reasonable size role. Again, checking IMDB, I see that he was also in Kingdom of Heaven last year (with another character called Nasir) although if I did notice seeing him in that, I had forgotten.

I thought this was a good film, I liked the way it was executed. Everything else that could have been said was said by the two previous posters. Good night and good luck is a good film too.

The trouble today is that if a film comes out that hasn't got flash bang wallop, one man against the world shit and super dolby soundtrack, then its got no chance.
Syriana is like movies used to be. A story, with a begining, middle and end. A story that doesn't just let you sit and cabbage at the flashing lights, you actually have to think for yourself!!

More of this and less drivel please Hollywood?

Robert Baer has written some interesting articles and fronted a channel 4 documentry (very much this is my first tv work, I'm still learning, but it was interesting). I suggest you read this, its long, but he's the stuff the information in this article into the film.

Same here, unfortunately.

I really enjoyed this film, it's disjointed format and uniformly excellent performances. Mark Strong, George Clooney, Alexander Siddig... all the performers really impressed.

It seemed a lot like a return to the more troubling politically aware cinema which came out of Hollywood in the late 60s / early 70s brought up to the present day. Shocking and brutally violent at times. A great script for actors to chew over.

More please.

I have been an avid movie watcher for over 40 yrs and I can honestly say that the last 5 yrs have been the worst in Hollywood history. If it wasn't for the independents I think I would have slit my wrists by now!!

Topic for consideration: What decade was the 'Golden' decade of Hollywood?

Me? 1930s without a doubt! From 'Wuthering Heights' (1933) to 'Gone with the Wind' ( 1939)! Superb.

Agreed, and agreed about the return of the 60/70s style political films.
