Stuff that sounds like 60s girl groups but is not actually 60s girl groups

Lol, I was just coming here cos I thought "September Girls would fit this thread". Have another girl band instead:

Also, am I being unfair in writing off the second September Girls album, or am I right in remembering them as having gone from being utterly perfect in their early stuff to just kind of average rock music on the second one?

I wasn't taken with the second album.

I'm wondering if "Stuff that sounds like 60s girl groups but is not actually 60s girl groups" includes almost everything that would be labelled "chamber pop".

I'm still not 100% clear on what chamber pop is, but I think I probably like it, so probably?

Great thread - glad September Girls made the grade already. Could do with more Ramones, though

And I love the way esp. later Afghan Whigs incorporate that 60s pop beat. This one ditches the grunge guitars completely, and the influence of Alex Chilton's Big Star is also pretty clear (which links us back to September Girls/Gurls, of course).

A bit more of a far-flung one, but Fucked Up had a great pair of singles covering Dolly Mixture and Shop Assistants:

They did also do versions of those songs with Manno from the Dangerloves/Bayonettes (no idea what those bands are but Bayonettes is a great name for a band of this genre) singing, where the 60s girl group influence is a bit more clear and direct, but those don't seem to be on youtube unless I'm missing something.

Just played on 6
As far as bands following the classic "ettes" formula go, I recently looked up the Regrettes after seeing someone wearing a t-shirt and thinking what a great name that is:

Although I think the Cigarettes were just a first-wave UK punk band who possibly didn't sound that much like a 60s girl group, despite the name?
Bit of a stretch but am reminded of 60s sound when listening to

Oh, stuff that's a bit of a stretch is definitely welcome here - that's part of what makes it interesting, seeing how bits and pieces of the sound end up in places you wouldn't necessarily expect.
