Spring Anime Season 2012

1324757819204.jpg

looks like a good season ahead.

first off two show are already on my must watch list

hyouka is by kyoani

medaka box is by gainax

that is all.

yeah basically my two favourite studios are both doing anime this season. i am happy.

as for the other offerings here are some first impressions

accel world might be good might be boring. i'm a bit 50/50 on sunrise stuff often they have an itresting premise but i just can keep up the entusiasm

saki spring might be good as i enjoyed the first saki. almost made me want to learn majhong

sankarea sounds like i might like it.

kore wa zombie desu ka? season 2 i will watch but i had mixed feeling about the first season.

AKB0048 sounds nuts i might enjoy that

shining hearts i will watch as i have some models from that series. no idea if it's any good

kimi to boku season 2 i'll watch as the first was fairly good

upotte! looks fun as i like girls with guns

there is other stuff that looks ok but those will be the ones that i watch the first episode or two of before i decide

We watched the first episode of Uchuu Kyoudai at the weekend - so far it's not strong on sci-fi, but it was extremely sweet and poignant with some humour, about the childhood dreams of a pair of brothers and how it has worked out for one of them but the older brother is down on his luck. Hard to tell which direction it's going to take, but I'd guess it will stay very focused on their relationship and very light on the sci-fi - which is absolutely fine by me, because I loved it. My parents who were visiting at the time were also charmed by it and asked us to get the rest of the season for them once it's aired.

The art style was very simple and to my uneducated eye it has a slightly dated appearance, but that fitted the atmosphere of it extremely well and just adds to its charm IMO. One of the best things about it was a very good use of subtle visual means to emphasise certain points of the story/dialogue/monologue throughout the episode or as mild (rather than slapstick) sight-gags, I hope this continues to remain a strong feature throughout the series because I felt it was extremely well done.

I will definitely be watching more of this one.

Edit to add: I hadn't spotted Hyouka previously, but the synopsis sounds interesting, I'll be giving that a go.

Uchuu Kyodai (space brothers) does have a nice feel to it.
it aims for the slightly older audience. it does have many thematic similarities to shonen stuff but mellowed out.
the art style does have a distinctive look some of the character design kinda reminds me of one piece but not so cartoony.

i do want to see how the story goes. i want to see if the older brother can achive his dreams

accel world

after watch a pre air copy of the first two episodes i'm a bit meh about this show.
the basic plot is it is the near future and people have got neural net style brain computer interfaces. one short tubby young boy gets pulled aside by the hot older girl and id given a special bit of software that gives him special abilities. the only downside is he has to battle ofther users to keep using the software.

it's not a horrible show but i really don't give a shit about the fighting.

i wory this show is going to mainly be battles witch will get boring after a while

Polar bear cafe
a panda goes looking for a job and finds himself at a cafe run by a polar bear. he fails the cafe interview but winds up getting a job at the zoo... being a panda (part time)
this one is kinda odd. part of the cast are human part are animal but the animals are drawn fairly realistically but talk like humans

it's wierd

medaka box
ok so this is gainax therefore i'm obliged to watch this one but so far... this one is odd the animation is fantastic and it looks like it might be a good comedy series but so far what has stuck out is the fanservice. it's a bit OTT. i think this is a show i really will have to watch more of before i judge. all i can say is the time flew by which is a good sign.

also one of the charactors in this one is basically a cameo from another gainax show

I assume this is the poster I am seeing everywhere of two blokes standing together, one in a space suit and one holding a dog in a space suit.

Whats the akb00 one? I assume it has something to do with the stupidly popular (and utterly shit) band.

Oh right, the pictures did not load up last time I looked. Yes thats the space brothers picture. Its slapped every bloodywhere.

You must have heard of AKB48??? A pop group of 52 young girls. Makes Morning Musume look like a sensible sized group.

since when did i ever show interest in 3d women.....

even if the are named after akiba

so yeah aparently this is a tie in production

well it doesn'y mean it will be bad

i mean i actually like some morning musume stuff i can sing along to happy summer wedding.

adding an anime to the mix isn't always a bad thing.........

i can't say i have much hope though

also AKB48... sounds like ak-47... intentional?

Well thats what I thought when I first heard of them, but apparently its just a coincidence. The AKB is for Akihabara and there were 48 of them at first.
I kept saying that surely it has something to do with the gun, but people here just said I was being silly.

these things happen.

well if they are named after akiba it is only appropreate that they have an anime

i bet they don't do proper akiba pop though

just watched sankarea and upotte!

sankarea looks good so far but i want to see the next episode as the main concept is as of yet unformed

upotte! on the other hand gets an immediate pass because no other medium would even conceive of telling this story.
there is a scool
all the student look like girls
they are in fact various automatic weapons (no it is not explained explanations are for those with out imaginations )

this is our main charactor

except she is also this
1024px-FNC_IMG_1527.jpg

she is the anthropomorphic personification of a FN FNC (a Belgium assault rifle). this seems to be a love comedy between her and the teacher where the line between realities being portrayed that she feels her hair trigger get ichy each time he is near and her hammer almost goes off (she crosses her legs) unfortunately as she has a skeleton stock this is represented in her human form as a thong. of course there is a timly gust of wind durning a bout of stair climbing and of course the only retaliation she know for embaresment is full auto.
hijinx ensue

this is ridiculous.

but it could never have been anything else but anime.

this show is better than then my inept preview could describe it.

but what i love is they make it work. all the girls are real guns and you just know there is at least one gun nut on the design team.
the laughs keep coming and there is even the crush she has on the teacher is kinda sweet . all without letting go of the guns as girls theme.

it's even got a brittish girl in it... she's from enfeild

space brother continues to be good fair. i liked how they dropped in what appeared to be a lesbian couple just as side characters and didn't make it an issue.

Upotte! is nuts in a great way. Elle the Sa 80 is always sick and worships FNCs older sister the FN FAL which is what she replaced.
Oh and for no apparent reason the galil the Israeli rifle is a fox girl.

Have seen episode 2 of Uchuu Kyoudai (Space Brothers) and still enjoying it immensely!
Saw the first episode of Sakamichi no Apollon and it looks interesting, I'm not massively into jazz tbh but I like the retro thing with this one.

Nate says the start of season 2 of Kimi to Boku was even better than season 1 (I never got into that series myself, I may have to have a bit of a marathon at some point to catch up!) He has also watched the 1st episode of Sankarea but I was asleep and missed it, so can't personally comment on it - he said that he was "waiting to see where it goes", if it's something I would like he will have me watch it I'm sure.

How the heck do you guys watch all this stuff, Im in japan and have not seen any of these shows. All that seems to be on every day is crayon shin chan and Ojarumaru and various magic girl shows.

Space brothers appears to already be a live action film.

The gun thing sounds fun.

I'm doing a massive anime bender to catch up on not just this season but series i missed previously.

UK/SB looks to be sitting comfortably in the wish fulfilment for adults part of my brain. you can make a diffrence. you can achive your goals.

i quite like the principle of kimi to boku. it's just the same as most of the genral school life stuff i normally watch but with stock charactors heavily influenced by girls comics.* i'm not sure what the last episode says about the love triangle mary has going.

with sankarea i'm still waiting. it uses some really unpleasant themes to start off with but i'm guessing it's going to go a bit more into love comedy. it's not like i'd mind which way it goes but untill that point i won't really know how i feel about the series.

ok now for the catch up

Saki Achiga-hen - Episode of Side-A
Sports manga about mahjong. ok this is a spin off series and i would recomend checking out saki first but i don't think you'll miss any vital; plot points if you don't. i'm not sure how to describe this one unless you know how sports manga go. but i'll put it this way in all ports mangas people have special attacks. not fighting but sports specially attacks.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

a ghost with amnesia haunts a school. i can say much more yet as the first episodes didn't reveal much. it's done so the first 6 or so minutes is played twice. once when we see unexplained this going on the again but we now see it was done by the ghost. one thing you can say about it is the ghost girl is hot for the one guy who can see her. much flirting ensues. i dunno if this is horror or love story.

Haiyore! Nyarlko
people who have been paying attention to these thread may recognise the name. a while back this got a series of animated shorts but they were a bit indeciferable if you hadn't read the novels already. well it's now got a full series.
in this show all the lovcraftian gods are actually space aliens.... and cute girls

Nazo no Kanojo X
this one i was unsure about to start with but by the time i saw the next episode preview i wanted to se the next episode so badly i was frustrated that i hadn't waited till there was two episodes.
the thing is... i don't wan't to spoil the episode.
this show does have a big drooling fetish thing. but they managed to sell me on it.

Natsuiro Kiseki
give me another week then i might know

Acchi Kocchi
sweet little love comedy. grab the first ep if you like love comedies.

Tsuritama
a school student meets a self proclaimed alien who says that they need to save the world. but before that let's go fishing

i'm also doing some catch up series but more on those later

*it's gay porn with out the sex

Ah the beauty of the Internetz. I haven't watched any scheduled TV for ages (apart from Emmerdale :hmm: ) The rest of the time my TV is showing output from my PC, rather than the airwaves, as it were. :hmm:

Where would you go to see these things on the net then? I am interested in Uchu Kyodai and the gun thing out of curiousity.
