Spain vs Chile (Group B) Wednesday 18th June 2014

It has been very quiet watching the games in the bar here. Never been so quiet while the football's been on.

We get a new king tomorrow, maybe that will bring a little excitement to the country. Football isn't going to bring any.

Well hello and welcome back to the old style accident prone Spain. That was a weird few years but back to normal now

If we're still nil point this time tomorrow I'm blaming everyone who's laughing at spain right now.

Are Spain the first team knocked out? Or is it a dead heat with Australia?

Spain with no points and -6 goal difference? Just to clarify their tally over two games against lower ranked sides.

I'm one of those sad fucks that ends up liking teams like Spain and Barcelona, even when the novelty has worn off - not been a good year. Oh, and I'm a Man Utd fan.

I dunno how you define the first team knocked out. They're both out but Spain are worse on goal difference so on that basis then it's Spain.

I'm the same. I've liked Barcelona and, by extension, Spain since I was about 8. They've always been my second teams. Was sad to see Spain go out, particularly in the manner they did but they deserve to go out, they were outplayed by Chile.

They really looked slow and unable to do anything other than sideways passes. One of those times you wish Roy Keane had been in the studio to pass judgement.

Yeah at the risk of sounding like a total bore, Spain have been found out now and all it seems to have taken was a fit team to close them down relentlessly. Every time Iniesta got the ball there were three players swarming all over him. I'm just surprised it all collapsed so quickly. Neither Holland or Chile let them pass it around and that was that.

it's as much about what they were doing off the ball as off it. Old Spain closed down other teams in possession so quickly that no one had the ball long enough to do them any damage. This enabled their defence to squeeze up keep the ball one end, and meant their full backs could be used as a constant out ball. without all that closing down they're just a team that leaves a bundle of space in behind them and down the wings...
