Somerfield

I would rather spend a little bit extra at Somerfield than battle with the great unwashed in a Morrisons. If Somerfield is good enough for Lindsay Lohan, then it's good enough for me ;)

Although TBF I don't see the lack of decent supermarkets in Camberwell as a problem - everything apart from maybe meat and cheese can be got from superior independent shops (unless you're after readymeals I guess).

Never been to the Camberwell one, but I've generally found Somerfields to be reasonably priced. The staff are generally pretty helpful, too.

The last time I went into Somerfield (Lower Clapton Road) I asked for olives and the assistant didn't reply - just looked at me blankly - I repeated myself and still got no reply - on my third attempt only when I asked him if he was alright did he reply - and he didn't know what olives were :(

the east dulwich somerfield staff didn't know what nut roast was :)
and were a wee bit 'er. we've got sausages'....

They changed my Morrisons into a Somerfield. It became far better and much cheaper. I wouldn't shop there before but now I find bargains galore.

The sad news is that it's turning into a Waitrose in a couple of months. I have nothing against Waitrose it's just the Somerfield bargains have been pretty great of late.

I stopped going to either of the Somerfields in Camberwell 2 years ago, just too much of a soul destroying experience. Been using Sainsburys on Dog Kennel Hill since but have definitely missed the option of just popping to a nearer store sometimes for convenience. Hopefully the new Morrisons and Co-op will provide that opportunity. At the very least they won't be Somerfields.

They Sainsburies on Doig kennel Hill is large and offers some good bargains but tjetr wine, well the expensive ones at least are well over priced
This Pomerol for example

is £25 - a bit steep

The Camberwell Somerfield (the big one in Butterfly Walk) is closing tomorrow - Hooray!

It was even more depressing than normal when I went there today:

(mainly reduced price damaged cans/ other stuff they cant transfer to the other shop - in many cases still more expensive than Sainsburys full price itmes)

The small Somerfield at Camberwell was closed this morning due to a power cut, and although I can't remember which store it referred to as the 'nearest' it certainly wasn't "the one across the road".

I'm sure it was a Morrison's briefly just after they bought out Safeway before changing quickly to Somerfields.

It was still a shit supermarket so don't get your hopes up

Morrisons have a feeling of desperation about them.

A more depressing shopping experience is hard to imagine.

Netto maybe. :(

Yes it was.

Morrisons is the only place I've ever found Hammonds Chop Sauce in the last few years, and although it wasn't a big deal to pop in to the big one at Stratford when I was up that way, it'll be much more convenient to be able to get it locally.

That's hotspur. What the fuck is different about it from any other supermarket? The quality is no worse than Sainsburg's but the prices are about half.

That's what I think. The Morrisons near me is fine and good value.

I think they had a lot of teething problems when they took over all the Safeways, but they are much better now.

I imagine there will be most undiginified behaviour. When Iceland opened at Archway it was a turnout to rival a country show :(

I am just debating whether to get up early to be there for the opening or whether to stroll down later on - hopefully they will have lots of first day promotions available or at least balloons to give away!

I might drop by that way on the way home just to have a quick shufty and see what it's like.

Morrisons is the only place I know of that sells Hammond's Chop Sauce. I hope that this new branch will continue the tradition.

Well didnt manage to get there before opening but went at lunchtime: no first day promotions that I can see and no free balloons but it was very full of people and the selection of food and prices look infintely better than Somerfield

I went there on wednesday and actually found the experience quite pleasant. I normally hate big supermarkets. The staff where polite, things look neat and tidy, the lights werent tooo bright.

Its much better than deathly scummerfields x x

Yeah my experience having visited it on Tuesday and today has generally been positive - the staff are helpful and the range is reasonable and best thing are the good prices - much better than Somers.

What struck me most was how shiny things like the baskets are

They also do lactofree milk and cheese there, which is very helpful. Much more convenient to go there on the way home than a detour via the big Tesco at the bottom of Brixton Hill.
