Some photos of Mainz, Germany

I didn't get to see as much of the place as I'd liked. It wasn't as pretty as I thought it might be, but then 80% of the city centre was destroyed in WW2. Anyone else been?

Mainz in photos: architecture, tasty train meals, street scenes and The Monochrome Set, May 2018

I haven’t been to Mainz but I did visit Frankfurt a couple of years back and was surprised that after the war a lot of the stuff was rebuilt exactly as it was before, including the churches and ye olde timber framed buildings. A very different approach to that followed in this country, and one I think I prefer.

Just because the reason for buildings collapsing was war doesn’t mean everything needs to be renewed. After all, if part of Canterbury cathedral collapsed due to subsidence I’d hope we wouldn’t stick a brutalist concrete slab up in its place but would repair it sympathetically.
