Solution/Great British Carnival, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Sunday July 27, Free

Not going to make this today now. Spent all day at Ealing Jazz festival y/day - ending with an absolutely incredible and moving set by United Vibrations, who are my new favourite band - and after Friday night at Ronnie Scott's, the missus and I are somewhat tender and have a shit load to do today.

Have a good one. If anything changes, as I know Rutita & her hair, it'll be easy to find ya'll.

Gutted that we won't be bumping into eachother today, it's been an age already! :(

Glad you and the missus have had a good weekend already though and hope to see you for a FULL catch up soon. :)

Base/picnic camp/meeting point...near the red helter skelter thingymajiggy and solution sound system between 2:30 - 3pm! Just finishing a job application, gonna work out, give the lucy dog a massive walk, gather some nibbles and then PARTY in the sun!

As an aside Rutita1 - another cpl of bands who tore the roof off the place were Rumba de Bodas from Italy and Wara, a Cuban hip hop Rumba Jazz outfit. Those 2 and United Vibrations were all on the Global Local stage - mesmerisingly live all of them and IMO worth checking out.

What a super picture (Tower of POWER) and what a great afternoon dancing to Solution, Jah Observer and the London School of Samba (naturally, since I was with the Mrs, my interest was strictly focussed on the percussion band and not on the scantily-clad ladies ;) )

Just caught a glimpse of the giant lemurs, and the giant pigeons, the animals were warming up for the parade when we left.

BTW a lot of talk of FIRE, judgement by fire, "bun down Bablyon" in lyrics heard yesterday. Could it be that the second judgement (the first judgement was water - Noah's flood) will come by fire, in the form of global warming? (a cheery thought for you all on a Monday morning :D )

I think this was a very special event. Great British Carnival isnt the best name, neither is Queen Elizabeth Park, but aside from that there was something very unique about this and I cant think of a better thing to take kids to...

I hadnt been to the Olympic park before - nice to see what that extra £10 a month of council tax for the last 10 years has been spent on. Ive always thought the big red tower looked a bit ugly from a distance, but up close its quite impressive, like an arthouse rollercoaster. The park space is all brand new and a little too perfectly manicured but its a pleasant environment really.

Anyhow, the event itself worked really well - lots of wonderful carnival music - must admit i didnt really check any of it as i was glued to the speakerstack, but i did have a quick runround before the final closing carnival procession, and caught Rhythms of the City who looked to be a great community samba band.

The carnival procession was done beautifully, fantastic costumes and great to see so many kids involved. I look forward to seeing some photos of it. There was plenty of space, it was very family friendly, and it made me realise just how fucked up notting hill carnival is. The carnival procession bit of NH carnival really suffers due to the amount of people who turn out. (i reckon the best way to sort out NH carnival is have one day of jsut carnival processions/truck sounds and another day of static sounds - or better still 1 day of carnival, saturday + 2 days of statics, sun monday!)

Not only was this thing brilliantly organised, the main thing was how safe a space it was for families, children running around all over the place, getting involved, doing cartwheels, making new friends ... i found it all very idyllic and the atmosphere was very special as a result.

I hear they hope to make this an annual fixture, so fingers crossed for that. Definitely will be back next year if it is....

This man Pax Nindi not only looked the part, played a great Tubbys dub set and chatted the mic in an African dialect, but was also one of the organisers of the event... in fact i see he was also Artistic Director of St Pauls Carnival up until 2010
