He lived in what was described by Country Life magazine as 'the most bonkers estate in Britain', with a restored Victorian railway station, the steepest standard gauge railway track in the world, and railway museum. He also saved the Flying Scotsman loco.

Sir William McAlpine, 6th Baronet - Wikipedia

He was probably a raging Tory, but he was a popular bloke with rail enthusiasts.

I thought he was long gone to be honest. I have been to the estate for their annual steam fair; massive. A bonkers & brilliant collection. Lady M held court big time for the day.
Who we (?) saw at the unveiling of the Gresley statue at Kings x.
Sorry the old boy has gone, he through so much dosh at steam preservation stuff.

Some incredible material in his collection -apart from a section of the original Blackfriars station stonework , I really coveted the collection of ex Midland Railway single line tokens in the signalbox - Welsh ones of couse - Pontardawe to Ynysgeinon Junction (and more) ..

Robert McAlpine and William McAlpine are (or at least were) two different construction companies.
