Should I move to Canada?

I went over there for first time ever this year. They seem to have a very right wing government at the moment unfortunately. I stayed in Alberta and that seemed to be pretty right wing as well. In Alberta they're very pro oil and pro hunting.

And yet... they seem to have a tremendous legacy in place - healthcare is much better than in the US and I reckon its only a matter of time before its better than the UK's NHS. Society is more equitable, and the education system is light years ahead of ours. also the poeple seem quite liberal, oil and animal rights aside. even the worst red necks I met around Medicine Hat in the "Canadian Badlands" don't seem to hate gays or trans people.

So its a bit of a mix really. I'd be over there like a shot if I could. But jobs seem to be quite a rarity & unless you have certain key skills you probably won't get in. They made it very clear in my 3 hour wait in immigration that they wanted me out the minute my visit was over!!

I lived & worked in Canada for 6 months, way back in 1996. I lived in downtown Vancover. Lovely place, very nice people, loads to recommend it, but it's also a big city & not wholly dissimilar to other such places.

Cost of living is high in the metropolitan areas, much less so if you live in a rural backwater, usually dominated by the logging industry & populated mainly by moose. Each to their own...

Canada is sort of like "USA-lite", the saccharine, diet version of the full-fat north American evilness.

Back when I lived there, you could only buy booze from government appointed off licences (never forget your passport if you want to buy anything stronger than Ribena), but overall it's a far less of a puritanical hypocrisy than the states.

It has its pros & cons, like every other place on the planet, but in Canada's case I'd argue that the pros outweigh the cons. Having said that, be realistic - the grass is always greener. Life can be great anywhere, or it can be crap anywhere, it's the specifics that matter.

In Alberta weed is illegal but the cops have a policy of toleration, and booze seemed pretty easy to get hold of IME

Pretty much, yeah.

I would move to Vancouver in a heartbeat given the chance.
Really? I guess if you like skiing maybe? I found it quite a dull place, the surrounding countryside excepted. Water St seemed to be the only place with a bit of character. Everyone's a bit too 'nice' to you as well which grates.

I don't have personal observations, but one of my friends wants to move there... and he is brainwashing me all the time, how great Canada is
