Royals giving up their titles - any examples?

TheDave

A man of constant sorrow
I was thinking about this earlier and I was wondering if their were any case's where a royal had willingly given up their title or actually became a non-royal of their own choice.

I know of examples where royals have changed to a different/lesser title but I don't think i've heard of one giving it all up.Quite possibly a silly question, I mean who would give up being in charge :D, just curious if anyone knew of a case where such a thing happened?

Any info/links would be appreciated.

Thanks

There's Edward V111's abdication in 1936 - or is that too obvious, & have I missed your point?

I know of his abdication, but he became a duke or something afterwards. So was still a a titled Royal. I'm looking for an example where they willingly gave up all titles. Probably never happened mind.

Thanks for your reply though.

Cardinal Henry Stuart, the brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie, eventually abdicated all 'rights' to the throne.

technically, you could argue that Kaiser Wilhelm did, as he 'voluntarily' gave up both the kaisership and the kingship of prussia, and took no other title.
however, the reality is that he was forced into it in effect, in that mutinies in the army and uprisings in the city (occasioned by the surrender) left him with precious litttle choice. he also laid claim to the kaisership till the day he died
